Cyclone Fanatic is counting down the days until Iowa State’s season opener against Northern Iowa by bringing you a stat, former Cyclone moment or any other random tidbits every morning to help countdown the days.
Entering the 1998 Cy-Hawk game, Iowa State wins over Iowa were few and far between. The Cyclones had lost 15 straight, including a 63-20 drubbing the previous year.
That changed on Sept. 12, 1998, when the Cyclones beat the Hawkeyes 27-9 at Kinnick Stadium to start a run of unprecedented ISU success in the rivalry. The Cyclones won the next four games against their in-state rival and they’ve won nine of the 17 games since 1998.
Those nine wins account for a big chunk of Iowa State’s 22 all-time wins over the Hawkeyes.
Iowa now leads the all-time series between the two schools 41-22 but with Iowa State winning three of the last five, it is clear the rivalry is still more competitive than it was before 1998.
