KNOXVILLE, Iowa. — A lot of people forget that Simeon Carter wasn’t in Ames for last year’s summer workouts. As a true freshman center, Carter didn’t get the eight weeks with his coaches that can be so crucial to a young big’s development.

Thinking back to that now, makes it less surprising the 6-foot-8-inch, 215-pound, Charlotte, N.C., native averaged only 2.7 minutes in 15 games last season. It also makes this upcoming summer even more important.

“Just his work capacity has to increase. On and off the court, doing the right thing. In the classroom and on the floor,” Iowa State head coach Steve Prohm said on Monday at the Cyclone Tailgate Tour stop in Knoxville. “He’s just got to put a lot of time into the weight room and on the floor this summer. He didn’t have a summer last year and now he’s going to have a good eight week summer session with us where he can get better in all those areas.”

The door is open for Carter to earn more playing time. There are a lot of minutes to fill in the Iowa State frontcourt with only a few guys to fill them.

Graduate transfer’s Merrill Holden and Darrell Bowie will both be asked to play big roles, while freshmen Solomon Young and Cameron Lard could battle for playing time as well. At the end of the day, it will just come down to production.

“Just good productive minutes, you know,” Prohm said. “Defend, rebound, score a little bit. Just provide a great presence around the basket and some really good toughness.”
