My friend Travis Hines from the Ames Tribune is reporting (on Twitter) that Marquette transfer Deonte Burton is currently on campus visiting Iowa State.
I’ve confirmed this through sources of my own and as of now, the Cyclones appear to be the overwhelming front-runner to land the 6-foot-4, 240-pound combo out of Marquette.
Burton is looking to transfer and be at his new home for the second semester.
Think Jameel McKay last year – a guy who paid his own way (second semester, 2014) to be on scholarship the following year. Chances are, Burton would be eligible halfway through next season much like McKay now.
Another item of note: McKay transferred to Iowa State from Marquette so there is a prior relationship. In fact, the pair (both from Milwaukee) has known each other for years prior to its time at Marquette. For Iowa State, this relationship is huge.
Burton could have anywhere from 1.5 to 2.5 years of eligibility at his next school depending on a waiver. It’s a wait and see type of situation.
As I tweeted earlier, I’d say I am 85 percent sure that Burton will end up in Ames. He will however likely take a visit to UCLA so if that happens, who knows how this works itself out.
Burton was ranked as Rivals.com’s 52nd best player in the class of 2013. He was a four-star prospect that was named to the Big East All-Rookie team last year as he averaged 6.9 points and 2.2 rebounds per game.
