Wrestling: ISU Dominant In Dual Openers

BOISE, Idaho – The Iowa State wrestling team (2-0, 0-0 Big 12) opened the 2014-15 dual season with a bang, picking up two commanding victories against Utah Valley (0-2, 0-0 WWC) and Boise State (1-1, 0-0 PAC 12). The Cyclones won the first matchup against Utah Valley 39-4 and the second against Boise State by a score of 36-8.

In the opening dual, Earl Hall got the Cyclones rolling with a pin in the first period over the Cougar’s Jade Rauser. Hall picked up a quick takedown and turned Rauser to secure the pin.

Hall’s pin was the first of three against the Cougars, as Lelund Weatherspoon (184) and Kyven Gadson (197) also won by fall over their opponents. Weatherspoon had worked to a 9-3 lead in the third period, scoring on a throw and pinning Utah Valley’s Ross Taylor in 6:24 to seal the victory.

Gadson notched his pin in the second period against Derek Thomas in the second period, scoring the fall in 3:39. Gadson got UVU’s Derek Thomas to his back early in the first stanza, but couldn’t establish control. The Waterloo, Iowa, native finished the match on a big turn coming out of a restart in the center of the mat.

Hall, Moreno, Weatherman and Gadson each picked up bonus-point victories in the nightcap of today’s action. Hall opened up the dual with a 13-4 tech-fall over Boise State’s Michael Cook. Hall scored six takedowns in an offensive show.

Moreno silenced the Bronco crowd, following a Boise State pin. The Urbandale, Iowa, native answered with a pin of his own, earning the fall over BSU’s Holden Packard in just 1 minute, 53 seconds. Moreno picked up a takedown early in the match and added a turn to seal the win.

Weatherman put points on the board for the second time today, scoring an 18-3 tech-fall over Austin Dewey. Weatherman scored at will, picking up six takedowns and adding a two-point nearfall in the effort.
