Recruiting: Two possible spring targets

With Percy Gibson’s transfer announcement happening earlier this week, Iowa State currently has three scholarships to burn this offseason. Of course, they don’t have to use all of them. Fred Hoiberg has proven over time though that he likes to bank a scholarship for a possible transfer that departs from another school during the year, much like Jameel McKay did last fall.

We currently know this: UNLV transfer Bryce Dejean-Jones will be in Ames this weekend for an official visit.

On Thursday morning, sources told CycloneFanatic.com that Iowa State is interested in two other prospects (among others).

One is a transfer out of Boston College, Ryan Anderson, a 6-foot-8 forward who averaged 14.3 points and 7.3 rebounds a season ago for the Eagles.Washington’s 247 site posted THIS UPDATE on Anderson earlier today, in which he mentioned the Cyclones as a contender.

The other prospect is Cinmeon Bowers, a 6-foot-6, 235-pound forward out of Chipola Junior College in Florida. Bowers was released from his scholarship from Florida State in March after this run in with the law.Rivals.com has reported that Bowers will officially visit Auburn this weekend. According to 247, Bowers is the top-ranked junior college player in the country.

Analysis: Anderson would be a home run. He has never averaged fewer than 7.3 rebounds per game in his career and would be a welcomed force in the paint for the Cyclones. Note that Anderson would have to sit out a season due to NCAA transfer rules.

Bowers is a little bit more of a wildcard. Iowa State initially recruited him out of high school so there is some familiarity there. Bowers would be available to play next season after averaging 11.0 points and 6.9 rebounds per game last year at Chipola.

Chris Williams

Chris was hired as Cyclone Fanatic’s publisher in the fall of 2009. He is Iowa State football's postgame show host on the Cyclone Radio Network and can be heard daily from 4-7 on Des Moines' top-rated sports station, 1460 KXnO. Williams, a 2007 graduate of Iowa State’s Greenlee School of Journalism, is the former publisher of the old CycloneNation.com (Scout.com). He has also written for the Des Moines Register, the Ames Tribune, CycloneReport.com and is the former sports director at KMA Radio. When Williams isn’t working, you can usually find him doing something outdoors with his wife Ashley, daughter Camryn, and Golden Retriever Dierks. He enjoys golfing, boating, country music, the Minnesota Vikings, Atlanta Braves and is passionate about any and all motor sports so finding Williams at a local dirt track is very common.
