Wrestling: Cyclones fall to No. 5 UNI, 24-13

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The Iowa State wrestling team (8-4 overall, 1-2 Big 12) fell on the road Saturday evening to No. 5 UNI (10-0 overall, 5-0 MAC), 24-13. The loss snapped a 10-match dual win streak over the Panthers that began on Jan. 24, 2004.

The undefeated Panthers won six of the ten bouts, scoring bonus points in three matches with a major decision, tech fall and pin.

In the main event of the night, All-American Michael Moreno prevailed, tallying a come from behind 9-6 victory over No. 11 Cooper Moore of UNI. Moreno trailed 6-4 with under a minute left in the match before hitting a five-point move to claim the lead.

The Urbandale, Iowa, native pushed his record to 21-6 overall and 8-3 in duals with the win. Moreno needs only four more wins this season to hit 60 career victories.

No. 2 Kyven Gadson , who wrestled his first collegiate dual match in front of his hometown, pushed his dual win streak to 26 with a 12-3 major decision over UNI’s Basil Minto. The Waterloo, Iowa, native scored four takedowns in the match and racked up 1:13 of riding time.  

The 2013 All-American is now 19-2 overall on the season and 11-0 in dual contests.

Sophomore Tanner Weatherman was victorious in the other ranked matchup of the evening at 174 pounds, downing No. 17 Cody Caldwell 9-5. Weatherman, ranked No. 8 nationally by InterMat scored four takedowns en route to the win.

The Huxley, Iowa, native is now 20-10 on the season and 7-4 in duals.

Senior transfer John Nicholson got back on the winning trail with a 6-3 victory over UNI’s Jarrett Jensen. Nicholson is 11-9 on the year and 3-5 in dual competition.
