D’Vario Montgomery is a Cyclone

According to the Tampa Bay Times, former South Florida wide receiver D’Vario Montgomery is transferring to Iowa State. Montgomery, who will sit out 2013 due to NCAA transfer rules, will have three years of eligibility remaining at the start of the 2014 season. He is the former high school teammate of Iowa State quarterback Sam Richardson

Out of high school, Rivals.com ranked Montgomery as a 4-star prospect and the 21st best receiver in the class of 2012. Over his final two seasons in high school, the 6-foot-5, 200-pound sophomore caught 96 passes for 1,662 yards and 21 touchdowns.

UPDATE: ISU’s press release on the signing

AMES, Iowa –Iowa State’s depth at wide receiver was bolstered with the announcement today that former USF football player D’Vario Montgomery will transfer to Iowa State.

Montgomery signed his financial aid agreement and has been admitted to school at Iowa State for the 2013-14 season. Montgomery, a sophomore, will redshirt the 2013 season under NCAA transfer rules.

“One thing that stuck out for me is that Coach Rhoads has taken the team to another level,” Montgomery said. “He pushes the players and gets them to compete and it’s something I want to be a part of.”

A native of Winter Park, Fla., Montgomery played one season at USF as a true freshman in 2012, catching six passes for 65 yards.

Montgomery was one of the most heralded receivers in the Class of 2012. A four-star recruit, he was selected to the Offense-Defense All-America game and played in the Central Florida All-Star game. Montgomery was a two-time all-state selection and a member of the Florida Times-Union Super 75.

“We are thrilled to have D’Vario join the Iowa State football team,” Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads said. “He is a big-play receiver who will fit in tremendously with our needs at that position. He has the chance for a very successful career at Iowa State with his skill-set and size (6-5).”

The 6-5, 200-pounder caught 96 passes for 1,662 yards and 21 touchdowns in his final two years in high school. His junior season was his best when he caught 45 passes for 1,100 yards and 15 touchdowns. His high school quarterback that season was Sam Richardson, ISU’s sophomore starting quarterback.

Montgomery noted the chemistry he had with Richardson was a key part of his decision to come to Iowa State.

“It’s a fresh new start and I am excited to get there with Sam to finish up the chemistry we had in high school,” Montgomery said. “This is a once in a lifetime thing and a blessing. It’s something I had to take a chance on because he is my quarterback.”
