STILLWATER, Okla. – The No. 20 Iowa State wrestling team (11-5 overall, 3-3 Big 12) went 2-1 on day at the first annual Big 12 Duals, capping it off with a 45-3 win over West Virginia. Friday night’s victory tied the largest margin of victory ever by the Cyclones over the Mountaineers in the all-time series.
No. 7 Kyven Gadson, who will be you’re No. 1 seed at 197 pounds tomorrow for the 2013 Big 12 Championships, pinned WVU’s Mark Colabucci in 47 seconds. The win is Gadson’s 12th straight dating back to Dec. 30 at the Midlands Championships. The Waterloo, Iowa native has won four of his last five matches by fall.
Other Cyclones picking up wins over WVU include true freshman John Meeks, redshirt senior Max Mayfield and redshirt sophomore No. 18 Michael Moreno.
Moreno has won 11 of his last 12 matches dating back to a Jan. 11 dual at Rutgers. The Urbandale, Iowa native avenged an 8-2 loss to No. 3 Tyler Caldwell of Oklahoma State earlier in the season by beating the two-time All-American 5-2 on Friday.
ISU returns to action tomorrow evening at the 2013 Big 12 Championships. Wrestling is set to begin at 5 p.m. (CST) at Gallagher-Iba Arena.
The coaches will meet tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. to decide the final seeds for the 2013 Big 12 Wrestling Championship. Likely seeds for Cyclone wrestlers go as followed: Finch No. 2 seed at 125, Meeks No. 3 seed at 133, Goettl No. 2 seed at 141, Mayfield No. 3 seed at 149, Molina No. 3 OR 4 seed at 157, Moreno No. 3 seed at 165, Weatherman No. 2 seed at 174, Beard No. 1 seed at 184, Gadson No. 1 seed at 197 and Gibson No. 2 seed at 285.
