Cyclones Earn All-America Nods For Athletics, Academics

AMES, Iowa – Three Cyclones garnered AVCA All-America team and honorable mention nods on Wednesday, the American Volleyball Coaches Association has announced. Kristen Hahn leads the Cyclone contingent with second team honors. Setter Alison Landwehr was named to the third team and sophomore Victoria Hurtt was named an all-America honorable mention. Jamie Straube picked up second team Capital One Academic All-America honors.

Last season, Landwehr was selected to the all-America first team and Hahn was named an honorable mention. Hurtt receives her first national award after leading the Cyclones’ offense this season.

Straube, who was named to the academic all-district team in 2010, is the first Cyclone since 1995 to earn national academic honors.

Hahn, from Cedar Rapids, was named the Big 12 Libero of the Year for the second-straight year in November and received her first All-Big 12 first team selection (unanimous). The junior broke a Big 12 record this season with eight weekly awards and boasts 12 such awards in her career, third all-time in conference history. Hahn was the only league player with more than 5.00 digs per set during conference play, averaging 1.00 more digs per set than the second-place player, at an average of 5.84 digs per set. Hahn finished the 2012 season with 18 20-dig performances, breaking the Iowa State record of 14, set by Hahn in 2011.

A senior from St. Louis, Mo., Landwehr was Big 12 Conference Setter of the Year, and another first team All-Big 12 member, leading the Big 12 this season with a conference average of 11.93 assists per set and tied a career-high with 66 assists in Iowa State’s upset win over No. 3 Texas on senior day. In four seasons with the Cyclones, three as the starting setter, Landwehr collected 3,862 assists, third-most in Iowa State history. Her career average of 11.39 assists per set in second all-time at Iowa State.

Hurtt led Iowa State in 2012 with 342 kills and an average of 3.03 kills per set, the only Cyclone to average 3.00 kills per set. A unanimous selection the All-Big 12 first team, the Kansas City, Mo. native finished the year ranked in the top-10 in the league in both kills per set (3.45) and points per set (3.64) during the conference season.

Tecumseh, Neb. native Straube, holds a 3.99 cumulative GPA in her course work leading to a degree in kinesiology. On the court, the two-time AVCA All-America honorable mention ranks eighth in the Big 12 this season with a .315 average. Straube finishes her career at Iowa State with a .300 average, just the second Cyclone in program history to hit .300.

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
