Cyclones fall to Old Dominion in dual opener

AMES, Iowa – A crowd of 2,055 was present at Hilton Coliseum today as the Iowa State wrestling team opened up its dual season against Old Dominion. The Monarchs were victorious, winning the dual 22-13.

Iowa State (0-1, 0-0 Big 12) returns to action to face instate rival Iowa on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m. in Iowa City, Iowa. The dual will be part of the annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series, which Iowa State currently leads 9-2.

“We have work to do,” Iowa State head wrestling coach Kevin Jackson said. “We have a big week in front of us. We feel that we didn’t set the tone today, set the pace.”

At 197 pounds, Iowa State’s Kyven Gadson won his debut match of the 2012-13 season. The redshirt sophomore scored a 4-2 decision over Old Dominion’s Alex Henderson. Gadson got a takedown 12 seconds into the first sudden victory period to pick up the win. The redshirt sophomore was sidelined most of last season with a shoulder injury.

“Kyven has a lot of heart,” Jackson said. “That was his first match in a year and we needed to see some more of that heart from a few other guys.”

Reigning Big 12 heavyweight champion Matt Gibson was victorious in his first dual match of the season. The Vallejo, Calif., native, currently ranked 17th, defeated Matt Tourdot in a 4-3 decision moving his record to 7-1 on the year.

Redshirt junior Boaz Beard was impressive in his season debut at 184 pounds. Beard, who is currently ranked No. 16 by InterMat and No. 15 by W.I.N. Magazine, won 10-2 over Old Dominion’s Austin Coburn. Beard picked up a quick five points in the first period on a takedown and near fall en route to the major decision.

In the final match of the day at 165 pounds, redshirt sophomore Michael Moreno defeated Adrin Taylor 7-2. Moreno is wrestling up a weight class, as he was the starter most of least season at 157 pounds. The Urbandale, Iowa native is now 6-0 on the season.
