The Doc Spot: Kansas State Injury Report

By Chris Williams, CycloneFanatic.com Publisher

Your expert injury report for Iowa State vs. Kansas State courtesy of our friends at the Iowa Clinic.

Two (maybe three) injuries on the Iowa State football team could have an impact on Saturday’s road trip to Kansas State. The first has to do with junior wide receiver Josh Lenz. I caught up with an expert at the Iowa Clinic earlier this week to discuss this topic. Here’s what went down.

CF: Wide receiver Josh Lenz left the Oklahoma State game with what Paul Rhoads has referred to as a "calf injury." It’s a bruise of some sort. Team doctors too x-rays of Lenz’s leg after the game that came back negative. Lenz missed last Saturday’s game with Oklahoma but was reportedly running with the team on Sunday night. With the information that I’ve given you about Lenz’s injury, what do you anticipate is wrong with his leg and what sort of time frame do calf injuries need to recover? Paul Rhoads has said that Lenz is hopeful for Kansas State. What do you think?

Dr. Nicholas Honkamp, Des Moines Orthopaedic Surgeons says: Lenz may likely had a calf strain of the gastroc muscle.  Depending on the degree of the strain, it can take anywhere from 2-6 weeks to recover.  It sounds as though this may be a lesser degree of strain, so he may be ready to go by the Kansas State game.

— Paul Rhoads’ quote from Monday on Josh Lenz: "Josh Lenz ran yesterday (Sunday) with our football team and we are hopeful that he’ll be available this Saturday."

— Sophomore running back James White missed most of last week’s game against Oklahoma with a shoulder injury that he suffered in the Oklahoma State game. All indications point to him being ready to play on Saturday.

"James White was pretty much at full strength with everything that we did on Sunday," said Rhoads.

— In one other injury update, running back Shontrelle Johnson is doing well in his recovery from neck surgery according to Rhoads.

"Shontrelle Johnson is back in Ames recovering from surgery, has a soft collar around his neck but doing very well."

Rhoads said that Johnson will not be ready to play for Iowa State’s bowl game.
