Week one depth chart report

Iowa State’s depth chart for Thursday night’s 2010 season opener against Northern Illinois was released on Sunday evening.

Some notes:

I was surprised to see a few things on the defensive side of the football. The biggest move in my opinion was naming senior Bailey Johnson the starting defensive tackle over sophomore Jake McDonough, a guy who the coaches have been raving about all camp long. Still, fans should plan on seeing McDonough a lot on Thursday night and throughout the rest of the season. There will be a lot of guys moving in and out on the Iowa State defensive line consistently.

– Staying on the defensive line for a second, sophomore Roosevelt Maggitt is now backing up senior Rashawn Parter at the right end position. Maggitt had previously backed up Patrick Neal on the left side of the line. Former linebacker Jacob Lattimer is now listed as Neal’s backup.

– It appears that true freshman linebacker Jeremiah George is not going to redshirt this season. George is listed as Iowa State’s second-string middle linebacker behind Matt Tau’fo’ou.

Senior Zac Sandvig is listed as Iowa State’s starting strong safety for Tuesday. He’s replacing the suspended David Sims. Redshirt freshman Jacques Washington is Sandvig’s backup.

– As expected, Iowa State still doesn’t have a true starting punter. Freshman Kirby Van Der Kamp is listed as a co-starter with senior Daniel Kuehl, who earned a scholarship last week.

Jeff Woody is Alexander Robinson’s backup at the running back position for Iowa State. This shouldn’t surprise anybody after the way Iowa State’s coaching staff has been talking about Woody over the past few weeks. Redshirt freshman James White is listed as the third-string back, with true freshman Shontrelle Johnson coming in at number four. The fact that Johnson is on the depth chart tells me that he’ll play as a true freshman. Don’t take that to the bank until we hear it from Paul Rhoads at his Monday press conference, but it makes sense. Also, I wouldn’t think that the staff would avoid redshirting Johnson just to keep him on the sideline. My prediction is that Johnson will be used in different situations and formations during the 2010 season. Only time will tell.
