Notebook: WBB Recap, 12-4

The Iowa State women’s basketball team has now won three games in a row after beating Mississippi Valley State 83-44 on Tuesday night. The Cyclones are now 4-1 on the young season.

Here are some important notes from the five games that have been played so far. – Allison Lacey tallied in her second double-double of the year with 10 points and 10 assists on Tuesday Lacey leads the Big 12 averaging 8.6 assists per game. Lacey leads the league with 43 assists and only nine turnovers this season.

– For the first time this year, on Tuesday, Iowa State had six players in double figures.

– Iowa State had 23 assists to just 13 turnovers compared to Mississippi Valley State’s seven assists and 16 turnovers. Iowa State is second in the conference only to Texas A&M in assist/turnover ratio.

– Iowa State leads the Big 12 in scoring defense (50points/game), defensive rebounds (29/games), and the most 3-pointers made, averaging 10 per game.

– Iowa State is third in the nation in 3-point percentage (48.3%) and fifth in the nation in field goal percentage (50.5%).

Moore’s Thoughts

Now that the team has won three in a row by an average of 32 points a game, this team should be getting their swagger back. As I have said before, this team is going to have some growing pains. That is expected when you have three freshmen playing in the post. But hopefully we will see this team grow quickly as the Big 12 schedule is not going to be easy. With eight games until league play begins, I am hoping to see this team sitting at 11-2. I’m not sure where that second loss will be, but with coach Fennelly on the sidelines, Iowa State really has nothing to worry about.

In order to hit that 11-2 mark, these things need to happen:

Lacey needs to continue to put the team on her back.

Kelsey Bolte needs to keep knocking down 3-pointers.

The three freshmen limit their mistakes.

This could be a special team by the time March comes along.
