Garrett’s injury is minor, comments on point guards

On Wednesday night, Iowa State point guard Diante Garrett announced to the world that he “twisted” his ankle via Twitter. Understandably, many Iowa State fans got concerned.

Garrett gave Cyclone fans good news on Thursday afternoon though, when he said that he will likely play on Sunday against Bradley.

“My body was going one way and my feet were going the other way. I just kind of twisted it,” Garrett said. “My pinky toe has been killing me. I took a lot of treatment this morning and before practice. I’ll be okay.”

Competition heats up at point guard While Garrett still has a secure hold on Iowa State’s starting point guard spot, true freshman Chris Colvin arguably played his best game of the season last Friday against Iowa. While his numbers weren’t eye-popping, Colvin was a key spark to Iowa State halfway through the second half in the Cyclones 81-71 win over the Hawkeyes.

“It was really good to see a young guy come out and be ready to play like that,” Garrett said. “We’ve been really going at it in practice and I think that it is really going to pay off.”

Sophomore Dominique Buckley has been the odd man out so far this season. According to Garrett, Buckley will get his chance.

“He has been practicing really well. His time will come,” Garrett said. “I think that he will get that time. The competition has been really good. We always go at it in any drill. We try to push each other so we all can get better.”

Garrett has started all 10 games at point guard for Iowa State this season. He’s averaging 7.6 points per game while collecting 60 assists to 20 turnovers.

Colvin has seen action in all 10 games this year, averaging 2.6 points. Colvin has dished out 22 assists compared to 25 turnovers.

Buckley has played in six games so far this season.
