Sorenson Dominates, Cyclones fall to Cornell
The following is a press release from Iowa State athletic communications...
AMES, Iowa - Iowa State fans were on their feet following Cyclone captain Andrew Sorenson's dominating performance on Senior Day Sunday in Hilton Coliseum. The No. 14 Iowa State wrestling team (2-12, 0-6 Big 12) fell 28-12 to No. 4 Cornell (8-0, 4-0 EIWA), but in the last match of the day Sorenson gave the Cardinal and Gold faithful a reason to cheer.
"For Andrew to go out the way he did I was extremely happy for him," Iowa State head coach Kevin Jackson said. "I'm proud of what he's all about and everything he's done while at Iowa State."
As Peppelman attempted to stall and avoid bonus points, 165-pounder Sorenson continued trading two-for-one with the Big Red grappler throughout the entire third period. Sorenson produced seven takedowns in the match, with his final throw coming in the last three seconds to secure the four-point technical fall.
Sorenson remains undefeated in dual competition and moves one match closer to securing 90 career wins. The Woden, Iowa native currently has 87 career wins on his Cyclone resume.
At 174 pounds, redshirt freshman Mikey England started the dual off for the first time this season and gave Iowa State an early 3-0 lead after a 6-1 decision over Billy George. A quick start gave England a 5-0 lead after the first period and the Centerville, Iowa native finished with nearly three minutes of riding time.
Redshirt freshman Michael Moreno had two-time defending national champion Kyle Dake on the ropes in the 157-pound matchup. Dake posted a takedown in the final 14 seconds of the first period and after a scoreless second period pulled away. Despite losing a tight 6-1 decision, Moreno's confidence remains high.
"It was frustrating because it was right there for the taking and just slipped through my grasp at the end," Moreno said. "I still have a lot of things to work on but I definitely have a lot of confidence right now."
At heavyweight, redshirt junior Matt Gibson scored bonus points against Cornell's Maciej Jochym. Gibson earned a 15-2 major decision and nearly pinned Jochym as time expired in the second period. Gibson produced eight near-fall points and two takedowns en route to his 20th win of the season. The Vallejo, Calif., native is currently ranked 14th in the nation.
Iowa State travels to Cedar Falls, Iowa Friday to face Northern Iowa at 7 p.m. CST.
