NORFOLK, Va. - The No. 18 Iowa State wrestling team faced off with Old Dominion Sunday at the Ted Constant Center in Norfolk, Va. The Cyclones and Monarchs won five matches each, but Old Dominion held onto an early lead for a 21-16 victory. Iowa State falls to 0-3 in dual competition, while the Monarchs improve to 4-1.
In the first match Cyclone 125-pounder Ryak Finch defeated Eric Dunnet in a 8-3 decision, but the Monarchs clinched the following two matches for an early edge. Monarch sophomore Scott Festejo pinned Iowa State's 133-pounder Shayden Terukina and 141-pounder RJ Hallman fell to Old Dominion's Justin LaValle in a 6-2 decision.
Although the Monarchs had already clinched the match when redshirt junior Matt Gibson stepped onto the mat for the heavyweight battle, Gibson ended the competition on a high note for the Cyclones. Gibson, ranked 19th nationally, posted a 13-1 major decision over redshirt freshman Matt Tourdot. The Vallejo, Calif., native had four takedowns and one three-point near fall in the victory.
After a scoreless first period in the 149-pound match, Joe Cozart had an escape in the second and Monarch Brennan Brumley responded with an escape in the final period. After the two were knotted 1-1 heading into the sudden victory period, Cozart ended it. The Brandon, Fla., native posted a takedown just 16 seconds into overtime to post a 3-1 victory.
After five matches the Cyclones trailed 14-6. Redshirt senior Andrew Sorenson started off the second half of matches with a 5-3 decision for Iowa State at 165 pounds. Sorenson, ranked sixth nationally, defeated ODU's Tristan Warner after a late takedown in the first period and a two-point reversal in the second. Sorenson remains undefeated this season for the Cyclones with a 3-0 dual competition record and is 7-0 overall.
In his first meet in cardinal and gold this season, No. 7 Chris Spangler lost a tight match against Old Dominion's No. 10 Te Edwards. Spangler had the first takedown of the match for an early 2-0 lead, but escapes by both Spangler and Edwards put Spangler up 3-1 to begin the final period. An early escape and takedown gave Edwards the first lead of the match at 4-3. With just 52 seconds remaining, Edwards reached one minute of riding time and a Spangler escape knotted the two grapplers again, 4-4. Despite a near-takedown in the final seconds, Spangler lost the 5-4 decision.
No. 16 Boaz Beard improves to 3-0 in dual competition this season after a 10-5 decision over Monarch 184-pounder Billy Curling. Beard posted four takedowns, one escape with over two minutes of riding time against Curling.
The Cyclones play host to No. 4 Oklahoma State in its first meet of Big 12 competition Friday. Iowa State will face off against the Cowboys at 7 p.m. (CST) in Hilton Coliseum.
