Sorry if there is already a thread about this but I just didn't have time to look for one. But has anyone else heard that wallabys is going to be moving to Somerset in north Ames and opening a rooftop bar? Someone told me this over the weekend and I have no idea if there is any truth to it or not so I thought I would check with all of you.

Had not heard that. It would be a good move, imho. That place could use a change of scenery. That whole area over in West Ames is in a pretty sorry state, and they could use a new building. Might even do better in the Sommerset area.

Interesting. I always liked Wallaby's, but it's not like that converted Happy Chef location is anything special.

This. They could definitely do with a better bar area and more space.

Yea, it's pretty sad over there the last time I was in Ames. Has the development out further west basically killed the older stretch on Lincoln Way?

Yeah, and for a business that has the potential to make a lot of dough off of the lunch crowd, there are not a lot of big employers over there now that McFarland Clinic moved so many employees to another location. Sommerset is growing, is in a more affluent area, and probably has just as many, if not more, (judging by the crowds at El Azteca) people in the lunch crowd.

I also heard of plans to relocate to Somerset, but it was just mentioned in passing, no concrete source.

This would be a good move for Wallabys. There current location is a dump.

This would certainly be interesting. First I've heard of it and not sure where they would be located in Somerset as there really isn't much commercial-zoned land left up there.

I heard they might be moving north, but nothing more specific. Possibly a new location in North Grand Mall area.

Must be moving closer to Gilbert so Fred doesn't have to drive so far when he wants to get dinner there.

That would be a good move for them. I always liked it when I went, but the location was kind of drab and just not where you would expect a place like that.

Put them out in Summerset and you easily have one of the top places in town.

Wallaby's is still my favorite place in town. A move would be good for them especially to the Somerset area.

Lots of great memories at that place when my wife and I were fresh out of college with no kids and living in Ames.

That would make more sense, since the mall has lots available for two new restuarants outside.

Agreed with others that while i liked wallabys it was always too cramped\small and not in the best location. Get a bigger space and it could be a big improvement for them.

The new building will be bigger (bigger kitchen) but the seating area will only be 20 more seats. $2.5M price tag on a lease-to-own contract with Hunziker. Really, really risky move. I think it's going in just north of El Azteca but I could've misheard.
