I don't know if this has been mentioned or not but I tried this trick last time and it worked perfectly.

When you go to check in at the desk the person will ask for either your ID or credit card.

Before going into the hotel put your CC and ID in your front pocket with a $20 bill in between them.

When the person asks for your ID/CC slip in the $20 and say "can you get me a nice room it's my wife's birthday (anniversary, etc)

I did this at the Planet Hollywood last year and it worked like a charm. The lady just slid the $20 in her pocket and asked me what I wanted. I told her a little bit bigger room facing the fountains. We got a little bit better room than the people we went with who didn't do the trick. You're not going to get a luxury sweet or anything but it was worth the $20.

The worse that can happen is that they give your $20 back.

Or, they could keep your $20, and not give you an upgrade.

Then you start screaming "She took my $20".

I make the request without the $ and usually end up with the nicer room.
