Is this team as quick and athletic as they sound? Are they good enough to be a top 5 team in the Big 12? Is the team chemistry good? What are your other thoughts on the team.

They have potential to be top 5. Cut down the turnovers, rebound better and it could happen.

Team has the ability to run, drive the basket and shoot. Haven't seen this from an ISU team in awhile.

Right now, I would say they likely finish some where in the 6-8 range. Their rebounding and defense are the two things that concern me the most. Depth is going to be a strength. Plus, unlike the past several years, they have a number of guys that can handle the ball and take it to the hoop.

I've really liked what I have seen from Dendy. He is the biggest surprise to me. Energy guy with some skills. Needs a little more polish with offensive moves. But it appears he can handle the ball and get out and defend pretty darn well. Very good compliment to Brackins. Gilstrap needs to slow down a little and get a little experience with Division I basketball and he will be very good, particularly at the offensive end.

I think they are an NCAA tournament bubble team. Unfortunately, their schedule is really difficult. They won't be able to afford getting upset by teams like Drake, Iowa, etc.

    This.

Talent will not keep them from winning a lot of games, which was the problem in past years.

This team could finish anywhere in the top 5 depending on coaching and effort.

They need to work on taking care of the ball, defending lanes better, and rebounding. If they do, this team could really go places.

Re: Question for those that have say the 2009 team play

    Yes, yes and yes.

I saw several different lineups that hopefully will be able to match up to most situations we would face. The depth is good as well.

I really like the uber-athletic frontline of Dendy-Brackins-Gilstrap. As for the guards it looks like the foursome will be Garrett-Staiger-Christopherson(who played the point at times decently)-Colvin.

Boozer would probably be the backup 3 though I am not sure how many minutes he will get.

And I shouldn't leave out Hamilton. After an ineffective start he ended up 4-4 with 9 points and 5 rebounds mostly in the 2nd half...

Buckley is pushing too hard because he may be the "odd man out". My advice to him would be to stay focused as his time will come. Look at last year with Boozer, down the stretch he made some nice contributions and looked good tonight...

    Yes, yes, and yes.

They look to run more than I expected, even knowing that we would pick up the tempo this year.

Basically, the stuff they have to work on has been well said in this thread already. Most of that is stuff that works itself out as the guys get more and more used to each other, and Gilstrap and Dendy get used to this level of competition.

These guys are going to be pretty good:yes::yes::yes:

Glistrap, Dendy, and Colvin have added a BUNCH of athleticism. Even Christopherson can drive at times. Staiger still seems very one dimensional. I'd rather see him sit on the bench and just come in when we need a designated three-point shooter. Idaho State's guards looked quicker than ours to me tonight...our guards may just need some work on their defense. Rebounding position needs a lot of work. A lot of watching and not consistently blocking out. GMac can run a lot more bodies in and out and not have huge drop-offs like the past few years. I'd say the chemistry looks pretty good. Dendy is very active. I am really liking his playing style. I am optimistic they can finish in the upper half of the conference rather than the lower half.

These guys are fun to watch. They have the ability to put points on the board. And the best part is... there's still room for improvement. You see the mistakes as they happen... then you look at the score and realize... wow... we're up by THAT MUCH already!?!?

Is there a reason why dorr played tonight? I thought he would redshirt?

Terrific athleticism! They need more effort defensively and on the glass. I like Christopherson ALOT, he impresses more than Staiger has thus far, he can create his own shot if needs to.

We can mix and match our guard play, and that will be important as the season progresses. This will be a good season, anywhere from 5-8 in conference.

Still can. Not sure on the specifics... but there's still time to bring out the redshirt. On Cyclones.com video pregame with Mac he talks about it a little bit. But I think there's around 5 games or so to decide.

Doesn't care to pay for 5 years of college maybe? I dunno.

Offense for a new team (4 new players played significant minutes) was outstanding. They will continue to improve as they learn to play against someone besides themselves in practice.

Defense... had stretches but lacked playing together on D at times. Still don't see a lot of improvement in terms of blocking out, rebounding and on the ball pressure. The second half was 44-44... not good for a team with inferior talent and having a home court advantage.

I think the talent is there and they showed great defenses "sometimes" but it needs to be all the time. I think the big "+" is Dendy. I think over time his energy level will be contagious. A high energy team can make up for a lot of other problems. If the top 10 guys go all-out when they are on the floor this team could simple out-power teams. I think Greg needs to tell this team to play smart offense (inside game pressuring the basket) and never relax on defense. If so, this team has the talent and depth to finish in the top 3-5 in the big 12 and eliminate any chance of not being in the big dance.

My guess is they may try to stagger the redshirts...or they may give Dorr the chance for PT and if it doesn't work out he can use the "redshirt" as a transfer year like Mann and Eikmeier did...I will say that I like the looks of the kid. He seems to move really well. A friend of mine who coached in the Cap City league told me before they drafted him that ISU got a steal with him walking on.

    For the new guys....

Gilstrap = looks like he may live up to the hype. Enough said.

Dendy = looks like he will exceed all expectations. He's the energy guy and the others already feed off him. I think he's the biggest "+" surprise. He's just appears to have a nack for getting his hands on the ball and being around the basket. Also looks like he could play forward or even do spot minutes playing deep inside like Pratt did. Does the dirty work well.

Scott = looks like he will exceed expectations. Great shooter, understands the game, can defend, is very quick, and can drive to the hoop. I doubt the other teams best defenders will not be on him and thus should have some good opportunities to score points. He's a student of the game. Him and Dendy I think are the next level of guys behind Brackins and Gilstrap that will determine how far we go this year.

Colvin = going to be great. I think he's our best defender already. Very smart player. Mature beyond his years. Needs some time to get comfortable scoring. I think sometimes freshmen are nervous and are not relaxed in their shooting touch. In time his offense will come as he has the moves. But his defense is very good and he's knows how to play the PG position.

In my opinion the starting line-up should be Brackins, Gilstrap, Dendy, Scott, and Colvin... with a lot of depth. That goes to show you how much different we are versus last year.

I sure hope Gilstrap gets another year. If so, we should be able to sustain being a very good team with the additional talent coming in, along with Oliver for the foreseeable future. With him I see a step back unless we get another high tier juco.

I know we don't always like Juco's as they only have 2 or less years... but I think this team will show to "be good now" Juco's are a viable option until at least 3-5 years of a winning culture is created. It takes more than 1 good year to build a sustainable program from where Greg started after the Morgan transition mess.

I was very impressed with Gilstrap. Has a nose for the ball and an instinct to score.

    Balls....

After seeing them play, I totally agree with all you said about the four new guys, and that would be my starting five, also. We have some good players around Brackins now. It's going to be a fun year for Cyclone basketball.

This is the best team I think we've put on the floor since 2000.

I have to think we'll win 5 or 6 more games then last year even with a tougher schedule.

I think Lucca is showing a lot more than he's getting credit for.

There isn't a combination I don't like, but my favorite right now is Garrett, Lucca, Gilstrap, Dendy and Brackins.
