We are replacing our old countertops and was wanting suggestions. We cant use the stock cabinets at your typical box store because we dont want the built in backsplash, and we have a custom bar countertop that needs made. We checked out home depot and they wanted over $1100 for formica. I thought that was pretty high considering there are no miters and they dont have to cut for the sink.

What is a good price per sq foot?

Is there a online countertop place that anyone has used before.

    Thanks

I got granite through Flooring Gallery through Renaissance in Urbandale.

Are you only looking at laminate countertops?

Formica typically runs around $90+ per linear foot installed.

I think we paid $1200 for concrete.

Seriously. That stuff looks great, and rocks. (pun intended).

They poured it in place. Some place in Newton did it for us. Here's a pic of me rolling out bread dough right on the recently finished counter.

When I got mine at lowes everything was priced out separate....end caps, sink cut out, etc.

Also...check the instock pieces in the store.

Check out Lowe's or Menards. If you bring all of the dimensions of your kitchen/bar in, they will give you a detailed price. I have about 45 sq ft of countertop in my kitchen ($3,500 was the quote for granite) and the quote I got for laminate was around $950 (not installed). If you are comfortable doing it yourself, I'd say go the Lowe's/Menards route. If not, I'd call around and get quotes from local counterrop/kitchen contractors (there are plenty).

    Hi def laminate. Best value.

If you need something made custom, you have to go with a store or contractor that will take precise measurements and get it right.

We went with HD laminate countertops last spring and got them thru Iowa Countertops in Grimes. We went back and forth between granite and laminate for over a month and finally decided on the laminate mainly because we had cheap cabinets that are original to our 9 year old Regency Home.

I got a neighbor who is a tile guy and he made the good point of saying does it really make sense to put $2600 worth of granite on $1400 worth of cabinets. We ended up getting around 40 sq foot of HD laminate, installed, with an undermount sink, for around $1000. I price it at Menards and it was actually going to cost a little more, plus I would of had to install it myself.

Not only did we save $1600 or so, we were able to get a stainless steel undermount sink with the laminate, something that they had not been able to do until the last year or two.
