I noticed that Paul Rhoads' DC at ISU in 95-96, Larry Coyer, is now without a job. He was assistant head coach and defensive line coach with the Tampa Bay Bucs. Moyer and the team mutually agreed to part ways with Larry to "purse other coaching endeavors".

I'm not sure I want him because of his age, but it would make some sense. His NFL ties would help recruiting. He was the Broncos DC for several years.

Not sure how long it will remain active, but...http://www.buccaneers.com/team/staffdetail.aspx?coachid=78

He's been coaching at the college/pro level longer than Rhoads, Ash, and Herman have been alive.

Thank God I read your headline twice - thought I saw Larry Cotlar as DC. I'm awake now!

Rhoads has said that Coyer is one of his defensive mentors - maybe the top one. He has copied Coyer's philosophies. There could be a good chance of this

I give this a 50-50 chance. Has Iowa roots and in the twilight of his career. Worked with PR before and lots of mutual respect.

Although I wouldn't mind the hire but I am not sure recruits really look at an NFL guy and say "thats were I need to be" I wouldn't mind a DC from a smaller school to open up a pipeline, Much like the hire of our OC...

Saw that too. I think there is a pretty good chance he is heading back to ISU. I think that would be a decent hire. The guy has a wealth of experience that could help teach the young guys how to play winning FB.

We seem to be filling in the blanks on recruiting ok so far, so I'm willing to sacrifice some of that for knowing Xs and Os. Being an NFL DC for 4 years would be tough to beat. Our defense was just pitiful and Coyer working with Rhoads would be an excellent team to turn it around. People have been wondering if Rhoads would be the DC and this would essentially be the same thing since they have similar backgrounds. It would likely be this guy's last stop too so he's not looking to jump ship to something better.

I agree. I think the guy is pretty well respected in coaching circles as well. The staff could round out pretty well as a combination of youth and experience.

Yeah, I was starting to think we needed another young gun, but an experienced guy on staff would be a good idea too. Eastern Iowa U, seemed to have some good luck doing that.

The guy can flat out coach defense. He was D Coordinator for Duncan for 3 years and we had the best secondary then that I can remember. Arnaud's dad John (Landshark) Larry Crawford (The Assassin) Joe Brown and Ronnie Osborne.

They played MTM all day long and could cover and hit.

I think it would be a good transition and he is still more than 15 years younger than Joe Grandpa

Let's see... shall we keep Bolt or switch to Coyer? It could be a two year venture in any case as we find a follow on. Oe would you rather have a DC from a smaller school like UNI? A Mark Farley protege?

And would Coyer run the tampa Two?

Keep Bolt? Where did I say that? I think Bolt is out no matter what, and I have been against anything that has to do with Mark Farley...

and are you asking me if Coyer will run the Tampa 2? I have no idea...i'd rather him not because it didn't work too well last year with our d...

He doesn't stay any where long. If he is the choice, PR better have some waiting to take over in a couple of years.

Perhaps Coyer setting the table, with Ash taking over in 2-3 years? That would work for me...
