    Niang had quite an impressive debut season, and most of us are giddy about his full-term potential.

    It got me thinking, who do you think were the highest-impact freshmen in Iowa State MBB history? Any performance beyond that season does not matter for this discussion — Also, this isn’t “first-year” (so jucos and transfers do not count. (Also, remove Georges from the equation for the moment).

    No ranking, but here are a few of mine (listed chronologically):
    * Dean Uthoff
    * Ron Harris
    * Barry Stevens
    * Jeff Grayer
    * Fred Hoiberg
    * Julius Michalik
    * Marcus Fizer
    * Jake Sullivan
    * Curtis Stinson

    I’m sure I left out a few — probably a good start, though. (Note: I think Thompson doesn’t qualify, since freshmen weren’t allowed to play varsity in that era. Correct

    I don't think Don Smith (Zaid Abdul-Aziz) played as a freshman either.

    Good point — I checked cyclones.com archives, thought I saw 4 years. I will edit. Thanks.

    Uthoff had 12 double-doubles, 9 games with 14+ rebounds, led the Big Eight in rebounding (11.3), and averaged a double-double for the entire season (11.5/11.3), yet wasn't named Big Eight FOY because the team was poor.

    With stats like that, it seems unthinkable — who did get FOY that season? Would it have been someone from KU or Missouri? Possibly KSU?

    After going through other schools' media guides, there may not have been a FOY award back then. Listings are spotty, at best.

    It's pretty much Jeff Grayer with some other guys getting honorable mention.

    I'll throw Rahshon Clark's name out there to give him due diligence.

    I remember not being impressed with Fizer his first year. Took him a year to get going. My memory could be fuzzy though.

    Just seeing the mention of Dean Uthoff brings back my disappointment again that Uthoff didn't transfer here. I know, its time to get over it. I just wish that dude (what was his thread name anyway?) that came on here several times saying he was coming here would take me out for a payback lunch or something after getting my hopes up for nothing. lol

    Though I hate him today, Adam Haluska had a pretty big impact as a freshman also...

    Didn't Jeff Hornacek start when he was a Freshman? I don't remember his numbers but I remember being impressed by his abilities right away.

    Shane Power played well on the 2000-2001 team that won a conference championship.

    Fizer was a 15 and 7 guy as a freshman and led the team in scoring if I remember correctly. Decent for a freshman but not what everyone was expecting out of a McD AA.

    He also slept with LE wife which gives him some serious street cred
