I know they did the I-O-W-A, with the flags. Not sure about I-O-WAH.

I went to an Iowa-Indiana game at Kinnick back in the early 90's (Friend's dad is a professor at UofI and gave us free tickets). It was a brutally cold day and there was a rather rotund, rather drunk Hawk fan sitting in front of us with no shirt on. Occasionally drunk guy would stand up and try to lead the section in a cheer. His last cheer went like this:

    "Gimme a "I", Gimme a "O", Gimme a "W", Gimme a "W", Gimme a "A", What's that spell?"

Most people in the section gave him a funny look. Then my buddy and I stood up and replied iowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwa!! (Emphasis on the W's) I think drunk guy left shortly thereafter.

Got confused, thought it was a spelling bee, and they all shouted the only word they knew?

Well, at least the Hawk fans can spell the name of their state. Go to a Missouri game in Columbia. One side of the stadium chants "M-I-Z", then the other "Z-O-U". Repeat x50.

Well, Missouri......makes sense. Not even spelling the whole state name.
