A twist on the recent (and recurring) “all-time Cyclone Lineupâ€￾ thread.

Instead of an ultimate ISU All-Star team, try this: Create 4 teams from among your top Iowa State players — a starting 5 and one 6th man on each squad.

Additional challenge: Make the teams as balanced as possible. Imagine this is a 4-team tournament, and you want each team to have an equal shot at winning the “title.â€￾

Rule 1: No starting unit may include more than 2 players who were prominent teammates on a real Iowa State team. (Reason: We could end up just choosing the top 4 actual teams).

Rule 2: Stay close to traditional G-G-C-F-F for each roster. It’s OK to move players one step out of position, or have some imbalanced rosters, depending on what works for your fictional units – just make it realistic.

Rules 1&2 do not apply to sixth man. However, you may want those players to mesh well with the starters’ positions to better effect.

Optional: I designed my lineups only with players I actually saw in action. But making it a rule might limit participation among younger fans (especially considering limits of Rule 1). If you do choose to follow my lead on that, specify when your roster-building begins.

I found out this process can take a little time. I'll post my teams shortly in a response.

  2. Too complicated; did not play.

I thought this would be a take on discussion a friend and I had this year. What four ISU team's would make up a ISU final four?

99-00 is a given what would your other 3 be?

team from I believe 86 the sweet sixteen team
95-96 the year Dedric and Co. were seniors
other spot is up for debate I'm flipping between 00-01 and this year's team.

I like that idea, too. You should make a new thread, in fact.

My knowledge of ISU teams goes back only so far, but I might be able to get an 8-team seeded bracket.

    1. 1999-2000
    8. 2004-05

    4. 1985-86
    5. 2011-12

    3. 2000-01
    6. 1995-96

    2. 1996-97
    7. 1991-92

Definitely could be disagreements on inclusion and seedings ... just like a real tournament.

Babb on Grayer in the first round? Now that would be interesting!

Not bad. I think 1 and 2 seeds would hold up. Fizer vs Cato would be a fun match-up. I think guards though on 99-00 would destroy 96-97.

Should I take my seeding and post a new thread?

I'd have to keep up with the polling.

(I'd welcome anyone else to do it instead )

Would probably have the upper hand --- but those other teams aren't bad, either.

I actually think Team B is the best all around team. A pass first point guard, a 3 point ace, the best player in ISU history who can score from everywhere, a low post threat that can hit the mid range jumper, and a center that can score effectively. Team B lacks some defense, but everyone can score.

Team C has a dominate power forward who can score at will, a shot blocking guru who is not the best offensively, a shooting guard who can do it all, and two other guys who can help out when needed. I would rank the 4 teams like this:

    Team B
    Team C
    Team A
    Team D

I would have to put my money on team A and C in the finals with team A winning. A lot of mismatch problems and with Tinsley dishing and scoring. That would be a tough one to beat...

With Stevie Johnson and Royce White ripping down the boards Id find that a very tough team to beat...

That's the basic thing I sought with this thread ... a lot of the same players are likely to show up ... it's fun to see how people might organize them differently.

Team A does look like it might have an edge. Team D may not seem as powerful, but does have both Fizer and Stevens.

I laughed when I was done with these, when I had Hoiberg and White on the same team.
