i am building a new deer stand, it is kind of like a tripod. I was working on it one night, and i turned around to get something in the pickup. All of a sudden i see this HUGE BUCK standing about 20 yards infront of me. he stood and looked at me for a couple seconds and started running away. he was the biggest buck i have ever seen in my life. im thinking he was possibly 12-14 pointer. i hope he is still there on dec. 2nd for shotgun season. last year was my first year of deer hunting, and i didnt get anything last year, so if i got this one, it would be a great start. im going to go scout tomorrow morning to see if i can see exactly how BIG he is.

Sounds like a decent location to learn to hunt. I hunt up around Decorah. Where do you go?

This will only be my 3rd year. The first year I got a fat doe, I actually was worried I shot a cow at first. Last year I didn't even get a shot. So this is my year I think.

I hit one with horns with my truck once.... Does that count? On a more serious note, we live right by Ledges state park, and the deer are absolutly everywhere!! You could stand on my roof at night and throw rocks at them if thats your cup of tea!

I hunt in Southwest Iowa. I usually do the 2nd shotgun season and two years ago I tried bow hunting. I'm going to do the 2nd shotgun season in December again and possibly bow hunting or the early November shotgun season.

I've only shot a few does and one button buck, but I have seen some MONSTERS in my short deer hunting career. I'm not talking about 10-11-12 pointers, I'm talking bigger than that. When I tried the youth hunting season in 8th grade with my dad, we saw what was at that time the largest buck my dad had ever seen before. It was probably 140 yards away in some brush and was way too far for me to try a shot at it. It was probably anywhere from a 12-14 point typical, but the rack and spread were huge. The largest buck I have ever seen ran out about 40-50 yards in front of my side of a hedge-row while a friend and I were walking a section. It ran out with 3-4 other bucks, but this one stood out above all I have ever seen before. It easily had 14+ points with an atypical rack, but what impressed me most was the thickness of the base and tines on the rack. I doubt I would have been able to wrap my fingers around the base of the antlers, and all the tines were very thick as well including two very pronounced drop tines there were probably 5 inches long. I shot several times at the buck before it made it over a terrace and over the top of the hill, but sadly I missed.

I always get excited about deer season, there are always good memories to be made. I'm still looking to shoot my first real buck. Hopefully this is the year!

I have never hunted, but I love deer meat. Hopefully one of my coworkers or former coworkers will kill me one this year, unlike last year.

Deer meat is very tasty. I actually have some deer stew my dad made last weekend in my dorm fridge ready for me to eat right now... :yes4lo:

Just seeing a buck that big is rare, but if you get a buck that big you may never get a chance at another one. I have got a lot of 8 pointers and those can vary in size by quite a bit.
But just seeing a 12 - 14 is a good start to the season.

There's no deer in this area. Just reindeer and caribou.

    Just got back from Arizona

where I was on a elk hunt. We got drawn for a cow/calf/Spike tag and ended up with young 500+lb spike. Had a 360 class bull 75 yards from me and it was unreal!

Regarding deer hunting, we hunt along the river by Emmetsburg. My biggest buck was a 9 pointer that scored 151. He dressed out at 275 Lbs. For the last 3 years we done a doe-only hunt to help cull the number.

The other morning when i went out at sunup, i saw 3 small does, a 4? point buck, and the big buck, but i could not tell how big he was. i would have had a shot at the large buck, he was about 40 yards, but i would not have had a shot at the others.

Can this site get any better? First we are talking ISU sports and now deer hunting. Hey Clonewino..... that looks like a nice 10 pointer in the one picture. I always go 2nd season shotgun, that way I get the extra weekend of hunting.
