What I was most proud of (and suprised about) last night

What stood out the most to me last night, and made me proud about, was the number of Iowa kids playing HUGE minutes for us on this team. It seemed like play after play the announcers were mentioning another kid from Iowa making a play.

I didn't realize how big of an Iowa flavor this team has. On offense of course you have Austen Arnaud, but also Ben Lamaak, Jake Williams, Josh Lenz, and Jeff Woody played quite a bit too.

On defense, Patrick Neal made some big plays, Jake McDonough, Zac Sandvig (INT), Michael O'Connell, and you may have heard Jake Knott's name being called a few times.

Not to mention our starting kicker and both punters are also from Iowa.

That's 4-5 guys on both sides of the ball that play a majority of the minutes that are from the state of Iowa. I think that is something we can all be proud of as well. I know that I am.

I agree. While we won't win without Texas and Florida kids in the mix, we can form a solid nucleus of Iowa kids. They're usually tough, fundamentally sound, and play with a lot of heart. Here's hoping that Rhoads gets his share of the in-state talent (and I'm pretty sure he will).

I'm apparently the only person who doesn't care where the players are from. If you can win football games with a bunch of Idahoans, great.

Idahoans - those are the guys that grow the corn, right?

Maria Sharapova: Don't you beat up other guys for a living? I don't know how to answer this.

    Short list:
Receivers reaching up and catching errant balls to help make 75%.
ARob looking like Troy Davis in short yeardage.
Some oline people huffing and puffing.
0 for 8 for thirds downs for NIU awhile.
18 yard punt for nom good reason.
Woody bruising for a 3 yard gain after being stopped.
C Franklin looking nimble on cutting and turning to advance the ball.
P Neal staying on his feet.
Our Kicker hitting several sidewinder balls.
Money and Sedrick starting off with some mistakes.
ARob not going very hard after the fumbled lateral.
    Knott having 9 solo tackles.
Sloppy tackling on Spann by others.
    NIU throwing over the top.

CFH HMagic bball season next year.
Let my Fred's Four Horsemen ride: Georges, Hogue, Nader, and McKay.

I care. If all our players are from Miami, Florida... I might as well be a Miami Hurricane fan. Our name should just change from Iowa State to Florida State, right?

I do agree, that if we lose every single game with a roster full of Iowa players, it doesn't make sense. But if we can be succesful with Iowa born players... that's even better in my eyes.

I love all Cyclones, but it's always good to have some home state flavor IMO.

I am from a whole different country but I bleed cardinal and gold. It does not matter where this kids come from. However, a winning football team in Iowa will ALWAYS have a better share of kids from Iowa as opposed to other schools within the state. That's just the fact. Your kids want to play in the home state first IF the school is winning games. If I was born and raised in Iowa and Iowa State had a big tradition in winning games, I wouldn't even look at the Texas teams. If you win, the recruits will come and mostly from Iowa. I don't think Paul needs to worry about hitting Iowa first as far as recruiting goes, he just needs to win - kids from Iowa will choose Iowa State if we keep winning like this.

I don't care if we have a single Iowa player. However, I do want us to be the first choice for the best in state talent.

I think that Iowa has shown that the best mix is some hard nosed tough Iowa born kids along with some talent from outside the state as well. There are a lot of Iowa born kids playing in the NFL right now.

    I used to think this way and still want the best players regardless of where they're from but CPR made an interesting case for recruiting Iowa hard that I never really considered (which may be obvious to others);

    (paraphrasing)

Recruiting and building relationships in Iowa creates fans in Iowa and it's those people that stregthen the brand the most. They are the people that are most apt to come to games, buy season tickets and ISU swag. The more relationships you have in Iowa the more you have a chance to convert hawks and huskers (provided the product on the field is good).

People talk about "heart" and "fight" a lot with football players. I think one place that comes from is having a pride for the school you're playing for. I don't have anything against out of state players, but I think that pride in playing ISU is really bolstered by having Iowa kids in leadership roles on the roster, so I like to see Iowa kids playing significant minutes.
