Re: Another Gulf Oil Rig Explosion

According to MSNBC, the rig "was not currently producing" - hopefully meaning they've NEVER been producing and that they haven't reached oil.

Also, all crew were in the water, supposedly one injured and the remaining are ok.

It was a production well, not a drilling well. Actually production platform. That means there is oil and gas there and the drilling vessel had already tapped the well. The platform is a semi-permanent fixture over the well that controls the flow of oil and gas into the pipeline system.

I was at a meeting (with a large drilling services customer) and have not had a chance to catch up on the details but word around the office when I got back was there is no leaking oil.

No spillage at this time is how the whole BP fiasco started in April. Only time will tell.

that's why I was wondering about the "not producing" statement.

If they haven't reached oil, there will (thankfully) be nothing to spill/leak.

Re: Another Gulf Oil Rig Explosion

My guess is at this point in time it's not even worth selling off my BP stock...

This particular platform has been producing oil and gas since the early 80s. It sits over several active wells and the oil from those wells all comes to this platform and then the oil and gas is stored on platform and fed into the pipeline back to shore.

They reached oil in this area in the early 1980s they were not drilling a well they were producing from a pretty good set of wells in a damn good field.

"The company said an initial flyover of the site indicated "no hydrocarbon spill." However, Coast Guard Petty Officer Elizabeth Bordelon said there is a sheen on the water at the site of the platform, measuring about 100-feet wide and stretching for one mile."

Re: Another Gulf Oil Rig Explosion

This oil and gas production platform was in approximately 340 feet of water. The Deepwater Horizon was drilling in 5000 feet of water. People free-dive without fins down to 380 feet. This in no way, shape, or form has the potential to be in the conversation of the BP well.
