Trademark - Waukee was just the Beginning

Rivals High - Promotion or piracy: Logo issues on rise

    What are everyone's thoughts?

There are two sides of the issue, but it does seems some colleges are being sticklers for their own personal gain, versus what the article mentioned as a "Learning Experience" for the children.

I also look at all the other local high schools: Urbandale (Miami), Southeast Polk (St. Louis), East (Green Bay, Grambling State), and others that are infringing on the trademark rights of both college and pro teams.

How about all the Valley's of the nation that use the same V and colors, or any other Rams, Tigers, Panthers, etc. teams that all use the same logo - do we now have a fued between larger high school teams to ensure their identity isn't mistaken with lesser non-competitive schools.

    ADDED NOTE:

Does this now extend into helmet designs as well. Colorado State vs St. Louis, Michigan vs anyone. It's not a logo, but definitely a signature style that is very much associated to a particular school or team.

I think Waukee should of told them where to go.
Wisky does not own the letter W.

as a designer, i think the companies, or schools, have every right to tell schools not to use their registered logo. It's one thing if it's similar, but most the time it's a copy with the colors changed. Companies pay big money to have these logo's created. Didn't the blender Cyclone logo cost the university a few million or something like that?

    My thoughts too.

There are literally hundreds of Wisconsin high schools that use the same exact W, and if not a W, their lettering is in the exact same font style.

I don't follow why UW singled out Waukee, just very hypocritical.

While they don't own the letter "W" a logo is a logo. i don't know what the Waukee "W" looked like, but if it looked exactly like Wisconsin's "W" then yeah they shouldn't be able to use it.

Re: Trademark - Waukee was just the Beginning

Colleges are doing this because legally they have to request a licensing fee for EVERYONE who uses their image for it to hold up in court. While high schools are not using the logos for profit, many other local businesses do. For schools like Wisconsin (Waukee's W) to be able to go after the local car dealership, they must also go after all other instances of the trademark being used illegally.

Yes, it is stupid, but from what I understand, that is they reasoning behind it and the colleges don't feel great about it either.

As far as Urbandale's U. I was actually the person who designed the new U. Urbandale got in trouble with Kansas with their old Jayhawk and now have the cartoon character. When I came up with the new U, our AD checked with Miami and since the line is slanted and off-center, Miami has no issue with it. They don't own the letter U. (But yeah, I definitely modeled it after Miami...)

Urbandale is flat out ripping the University of Miami and it honestly looks stupid. Miami looks good when they have it. Urbandale just looks like a bunch of wannabes.

Look them up, they aren't identical only similar.
Waukee decided it wasn't worth the costs to fight it.

Universities may have to request a licensing fee, but they have the option to waive it. The company I used to work for used logos from many different universities on products that we sold, and there was not always a fee involved for using them.

High schools can and should come up with their own logos with maybe one exception; if you're the Rams you should do the LA Rams / CSU thing.

Dude, this isn't about how good a logo looks. I'm not here to rip on schools for their designs - so lets keep this on subject.

I think Urbandale had to tweak theirs a little while back. I think they trademarked theirs as well.

The U on Urbandale's website is not their trademarked U.

    Urbandale J-Hawks

Urbandale's U is a different font with a different break from Miami's and obviously different colors.

With that logic you could say any high school with a logo similar to a college logo is a bunch of wannabes.
