    Why go to Omaha?

Besides to watch the Cyclones beat up on those darn Cornhuskers, what other possible reason would there be to go to Nebraska?

Today, the family went to the Omaha Zoo and I think we put on enough miles on our shoes to join Opera's power walk program. My feet and legs hurt, my neck ached and was exhausted from the scorching sun, but in the end of it all it was a great time.

I don't know who all have been or would like to go to the zoo, but I highly recommend it. There is plenty to see that makes it well worth the admission to get in. You can even bring your own food and have a picnic inside the area if you wish. They added a cool area with the nocturnal exhibit that was rightfully named "The Swamp". You walk around a wooden walkway in the complete pitch dark. Although there were any exiting animials past the albino alligator or oversized beaver, the experience of its own was pretty good. Now the second time through might not be as cool, but its hard to dismiss the fact that they do a great job to represent those atmosphers in the most realistice manner that they can for your enjoyment. They got a jungle/rainforest, desert, swamp, and the vast exhibit just on gorilla's and wild cats.

Some areas were sort of dull. The petting zoo is much better here in Des Moines, although they dont let the goat roam around freely anymore. There were also some very colorful African Wild dogs, but they were hidden away up on this hill with nothing else except themselves. If it hadn't been or the map, I never would have gone up there.

So if your looking for a fun, fairly cheap eventful activity for a day, I would head out to Omaha. Plus, its just on the border, so you really dont have to go that far into Nebraska.

Cool, thanks for the info. We are considering taking the twins there this summer sometime. They cannot get enough of the dsm zoo. Plus if we go to Omaha, I can stop at the grocery store and stock up on Fat Tire since it is not sold in Iowa....mmmm malty beer.

The zoo is great I have been there several times, and don't forget about the nebraska funiture mart too lol. Also I can't recall what the place is called but right off of 80 there is a puppy farm. A big warehouse with tons of puppies for sale it was a really cool place.

Edit: The pigmy hippo in the rain forest is my fav animal there, I want one for a pet lol.

We've been to that zoo, it is very good.

Also, the Old Market area in Omaha is awesome, especially when the weather is nice. :)

You should change your name to "The Todd" from Scrubs..."You know what I'm talking about, up high!"

    Re: Why go to Omaha?

I've made the trip to the Omaha Zoo a couple of times and I would certainly recommend it to anybody looking for a quick weekend trip. Can't say I've done anything else in the Omaha area so I don't know what else is there. And oh yes, it is a ton of walking, keep that in mind if you are taking young kids.

Henry Doorly is on par with San Diego Zoo. They have 50,000 season tiuckets sold. If you go twice, season tickets might be the way to go. Do not go during CWS.

    Re: Why go to Omaha?

I really wanted to catch a game, but you definately have to get the tickets in advance which i didnt. Besides after the money on for the food, triain rides, and othe misc. items; to add on for tickets was a little much in one day of spending.

It was crazy though when we left. An ridiculous line to get in, the GA section just huddled in the back waiting to make their sprinting way to the best seat. I did want to try and walk around all the merchandise stands that were up and down 13th street, but decided against it after I was having trouble standing from all the walking I had already done. Oh buy my daughter didnt complain one bit, she was ready to go again!
