    Hy-Vee Triathalon...going to watch/compete?

Is anyone competing in the Tri? They have amatuer and elite races, or is there anyone going just to watch. I know there are several members who stay pretty active with running/biking. Im curious to see if there is anyone that competes in TRIs. I've thought about it before, but the swimming portion is the one that would kill me at the moment. I need to find someplace with a pool to use for a decent price before I would thinking of doing a Tri.

I will definately head to down town Des Moines Sunday and check out the action. Because the prize purse is so large they have attracted the top athletes in the world for this event. The winner of the elite race gets $200,000 (one prize for the women's division and one for the men's...200K each) There are some kids races on Saturday but the big races will be on Sunday.

If you are competing good luck!

    Re: Hy-Vee Triathalon...going to watch/compete?

I am not competing this year, I hope to do it next year. I am running the dsm 1/2 marathon this fall. I think I will pass on a full this year, I have done a full the last 2 years, but the training is so brutal. 20M runs every saturday really take a toll on you and really make the wife want to kill you in your sleep.

BTW, if there are any newbie runners out there that want to do a 1/2 marathon this fall, I am leading a pace group of runners trying to get a 2:10.

What time does it all start on Sunday? Would it be televised?

    brianhos,

how many days per week r u going to be running? When r u starting your training? i was running 5-6 ays/week for dam to dam. I am thinking of trying the Half marathon this year. I know the distance is pretty close to the same at both, I think about .7 miles difference.

I run 3 days week. But I put in 3 pretty hard quality runs, I just don't have the time with 3 year old twins and a 20 month old to do a lot of runs. I usually do 4-5 on tue 4-5 on thurs and a 8-12M on sat morning.

The DM marathon has a great running group that meets every sat morning at greys lake. Come join us if you want. There is usually about 40-60 people there.

I am in the beginning phase of training for the Des Moines Marathon this year and I would really like to do the Tri next year...so I might make it out to run with the Capital Striders.

    Iowa Games

Check that out, the Iowa Games has Triathlon that looks good for a first timer. Maybe next year I will have to do that. All I have is a mountain bike right now so I do not have a lot speed on my bike.

Not just $200K, but $200K and a Hummer H3 for both M and F winners.

I'm pretty sure it's televised, but not sure by who. On my way home from work today, I noticed the Outback Steakhouse blimp at the Ankeny airport.

    Re: Hy-Vee Triathalon...going to watch/compete?

The closest thing to a triathlon for me would be speeding over to BW3's, downing 20 hot wings and slamming 3 of them large draws in about an hour. But I might try to make it downtown Sunday to see how in shape people live also....

    Re: Hy-Vee Triathalon...going to watch/compete?

I am going to a wedding out east today otherwise, I would definitely be watching... Triathlons have always kinda intrigued me... I really wanted to do the Big Creek last year but injured my shoulder trying to train for the swimming, probably because my stroke is terribly inefficient... Does anyone know of where someone can get some adult swim lessons (meaning technique, I grew up on the beach I know how to 'swim')? I know I can get through it I just don't want to waste all my gas on the swim leg...Having such a big event coming to Des Moines has rekindled my motivation...

I think the reason you found marathon training too hard is because you are doing 20mile runs every Saturday. I am currently working on qualifying for the Boston marathon and probably won't do a 20 mile run once before the qualifier. If I do, it will be once only. Those things kill you.

    Re: Hy-Vee Triathalon...going to watch/compete?

For you out of towners you can't believe how beautiful the city looks. The route is from Grays Lake to the State Capitol complex which is the heart of the city and I think anyone would be hard pressed to find a prettier route. I talked to some competitors yesterday that had been in triathalons around the world and they thought this setup was awesome.

I was checking out the scene yesterday and thought how we should recruit JP to this event next year. He is a former cross country guy that keeps in incredible shape. He can handle the 1.5k swim, the 40k bike and the 10k run with little sweat. The local press would be all over him, the athletic department would get all kinds of free publicity and it would be fun to have one of our own to root for.

    Re: Hy-Vee Triathalon...going to watch/compete?

We just got back from the youth nationals and it was pretty cool. A lot of 14 year old girls with bikes 10x the cost of mine and probably that much faster than mine as well. I think ill watch some of the amatuers tomorrow morning before I have to go into work and then hopefully when im done I can still get down town to watch the end of the race/awards. And I agree, the course is set up really nice, I was disappointed that they had certain areas of course that looped several times in downtown...but I guess it works better for the city to keep them all concentrated in one area rather than send them all over Des Moines.
