Tidbit on battle for starting punter job

Daniel Kuehl was put on scholarship today. Because of that, I asked Coach Rhoads if it meant he'd be the starter next Thursday against Northern Illinois.

    Here was his answer.

“That doesn’t mean that he has earned the starting role yet. Kirby hit a couple of boomers yesterday in practice. They both fared well today. I would say that Dan probably has an edge right now. Kirby is going to have to beat him out over the course of the next few practices to be the starter next Thursday and that could happen.”

Re: Tidbit on battle for starting punter job

It worries me when the basis of the starting punt job is who can "boom" it the farthest.

"Boomer" doesn't necessarily mean huge distance. It can also refer to hang time.

Because a punter has so many other responsibilities.

    A 35-yard punt with a 4.8 hang time is not a "boomer".

Re: Tidbit on battle for starting punter job

If it's all the same I'd take whoever gets the ball off the quickest. Not having a starting punter at this point worries me a little. In college a punter is one of the Top 3 most important positions IMO. Give me a guy that gets the ball off quick and gives me 38 yards over a guy that punts 45 but nearly gets it blocked many times.

Excessive intake of alcohol, we all know, kills brain cells, but naturally it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers.

Well -- if it's nearly blocked many times, I'll take that!

May my postings be polite and not misunderstood. (And hopefully funny on occasion.)

If it's 4th and 8 on the 39 we probably trot out Mahoney to go for a 56 yarder. He has the leg for it.

Considering we probably won't hit the 85 scholarship limit this year, and you can never underestimate the value of special teams, it is completely worth it.

You could probably find more important things to worry about if you really tried.
