Sosa wants his number retired by the Cubs

Sammy is upset the Cubs haven't retired his number. Shouldn't fans be more upset about his corked bats, possible steroids, the way he left Chicago, somehow able to speak English now and couldn't when he was in front of the Senate?

Report: Sammy Sosa says Chicago Cubs' No. 21 jersey 'should be untouchable' - ESPN Chicago

Please don't turn this thread into a Cubs suck/Cards suck thread. I'm a Cubs fan and think he does not deserve to have his number anyway close to Banks, Sandberg, Santo, Fergie, Maddux, and Williams. If anyone deserves there number there its Mark Grace.

Agreed, I am a life long Cubs fan ever since my 1st Ryno card in 1984. I forgot who he was the minute the senate thing happened, he is guilty and a fraud. Loved what he did in 1998 until I realized he was juiced like he was. Never want to see his number retired, I don't think the Cubs will ever do it. Sammy made the Cubs a ton of money though, can't deny him putting people in the seats back in the day.

Mark Grace does deserve it, but I would also want to see Sosa get his number retired. I really don't care about the steroids. He was putting butts in the seats at Wrigley and made them relevant in the world of baseball in those 4 years in between playoff births.

To be fair, he brought a lot more attention to North Chicago than anyone else has in the last decade.

This. At any rate if they aren't going to retire it offically, no one should wear that number ever again anyway. He did so much for the Cubs. Regardless of all the steroids, he will always be my favorite Cubs player of all time.

I really don't like the idea of anyone demanding that their number be retired.... just seems wrong some how.

Sosa was very fun to watch and gave me plenty of good memories as a Cubs fan, but come on. If you truly deserve to have your number retired it will happen in time.

When he gets elected to the Hall of Fame, like everybody else up there (except Santo, who SHOULD be), then we'll talk.

Yes, I know Maddux technically isn't, but he's a given, and he has the same number as Fergie.

I'm guessing he is speaking now since Tyler Colvin wears his number.

Kinda back to one of my original thoughts though, isn't it kind of strange how can now understand English?

I'm with Tim Kurkjian (sp?) on this. The entire baseball era was full of steroids, batters and pitchers alike (take a look at Kerry Wood pre-2003 and today...). Just accept that fact and put people in the Hall. Steroids or not. Just because they haven't been caught doesn't mean they were juicing.

Honestly, is Griffey the only longball hitter that played in the heart of that era who hasn't been implicated with steroids? Not counting Pujols.

The only other big time home run hitter I can think of is Frank Thomas.

I'll say that I loved Sammy for the majority of his MLB career until it became obvious that he was a cheater. He broke my heart. F him. He'll NEVER get close to the HOF. Starlin Castro is closer to having his number retired than Sammy is.

Excessive intake of alcohol, we all know, kills brain cells, but naturally it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers.

I just don't see it happening. If the hall accepts him later, maybe it could happen, but otherwise, no.
