I met my new neighbor Bizaro Edition

I met my new neighbors. I live in a nice neighborhood with nice fans. It's about equal, maybe a few more Cyclones than Hawkeyes but it's been a fun rivalry. We are all big fans, but it's been tasteful and fun. We all have a connection to "our" university, a degree or a spouses degree mostly. You'll see a cyclone rock, or a hawkeye bench on the front porch of a house, maybe a flag out on a football saturday, but nothing much more than two pieces of "flair" outside at a time. Then "they" showed up.

I knew I was in trouble a few weeks ago when the same SUV showed up multiple times at the house for sale across the street from me over the course of three days. The next day the sold sign went up, and 15 minutes after the realtor put up the sold sign the SUV shows up again. The guy puts up a "Hawk Fans Live Here" sign on a stake in the front yard landscaping. He leaves, and doesn't actually move in for two weeks. It was like he was staking his claim after landing on the moon.

The day they moved in was troubling. Two black vehicles pull up and park. The moving truck comes. The new neighbors get out in matching black Iowa shirts and black Iowa shorts, with a baby in a car seat dressed (you guessed it) a black Iowa onesie. They set up two black hawkeye bag chairs on the lawn. Okay so I think that maybe I'm making too much of it. Then I realize that their two black vehicles with black leather interiors each have hawkeye plates, hawkeye plate frames, two hawkeye bumper stickers (each) in the back window, hawkeye hitch covers, I-Club member stickers in the drivers side back seat windows, and mini hawkeye football helmets dangling from the review mirror. It's like living in an advertisement for the university. Everyday since, after work in the yard or the driveway one of them has had at least one piece of hawkeye clothing on. They are "those fans." the ones that you'd cringe at even if they were cyclones but the ones that you especially cringe at because as a cyclone fan you've been exposed to them all your life. Or then again maybe I'm over reacting. Then again, maybe not.

Those kinda fans are annoying no matter who they cheer for. I even throw up a little when it is clone fans going that overboard. It is just gawdy.

What's the big deal? They sound like half of the people in my neighborhood when I lived in Cedar Rapids.

    Maybe this will help

Better call before it's too late. Once they've established themselves, the whole neighborhood is in jeapordy.

The question is, how have they treated you (as a Cyclone fan)? Are they obnoxious and degrading or just overly enthusiastic?

Re: I met my new neighbor Bizaro Edition

Yeah, I'm curious if you found out if they are UI grads or not and if they are the kind of fan that is going to come over and give you crap every time the Hawks win and the Clones lose. That would get annoying. Wonder what the inside of the house is like...

My neighborhood we have some older folks that fly a Hawk windsock or flag on gamedays but they are old farts that really don't get too involved so no big deal and they root for the Clones some too. I fly a Cyclone flag off the house and have Cyclone plate cover on my car but that's all the outside of my house gets. I have an ISU fan accross the street so he's cool but he doesn't have any ISU stuff outside. Too much and it's overkill. I'm more into making my place look nice not tacky.

Re: I met my new neighbor Bizaro Edition

They've been nice, but a little reclusive so far but it's only been a week or so. We've stopped over when they were out and they always seem to be "just heading inside." I would attribute that to being an Iowa State person but the only sign could have been my kid's iowa state wagon. I will do some recon work and see if I can figure out where they graduated from.
