"Every NBA GM on speed dial", it works, here you go!

ISU’s NBA hook-ups reeled in Spartan guard

Posted on Aug 20, 2010 by Eric Petersen.
AMES — Chris Allen thinks he can play in the NBA someday.
He thinks Fred Hoiberg and Jeff Grayer, Iowa State men’s basketball coaches and ex-pros, can help him get there. The former Michigan State guard announced Friday he would finish his college career in Ames.
“That was one of the major factors for me. That’s a long-term dream of mine,” Allen said.
Allen will redshirt this year and has only the 2011-12 season to play. He chose ISU over Texas-El Paso, his other top choice.
“It came down to picking the best spot for me and a place where I feel comfortable,” Allen told The Gazette Friday. “Coach Hoiberg’s experience in the NBA, as well as coach Grayer’s — both those guys played guard in the NBA. I definitely want to be a guy who does that.”
Allen’s now former coach, Tom Izzo, thinks he’s got the stuff to do it.
The 6-3, 205-pounder has improved his defense greatly while his offensive game has remained strong. Allen averaged 8.2 points a game last season and his 141 career 3-pointers ranks 10th all-time in school history.
“When I recruited him I thought he was a pro prospect and I still think he is,” Izzo said. “He’s actually a better athlete than I thought he was. With a year off I think he’ll turn out to be a heck of a player.”

Well I was over on the Iowa board, and they made it sound like having strong connections to the NBA is a bad thing, so I'm skeptical of your enthusiasm

Except one guy said Fran had NBA ties because in his entire career he coached one kid who was drafted in the second round and MIGHT play this year. He affirmed me that in that scenario NBA connections are important. Also coaching one kid in your entire career to become a second round draft pick and MAYBE play in the NBA someday is more impressive to recruits than actually playing in the league for a decade and being a league executive. These are things we need to know.

Yeah, even the most dyed in the wool hawk fan has to admit on some level that Fred's tenure has been impressive, so far.

They can make fun of the "Speed Dial" line. They can claim that ISU is bringing in bad apples. They can even suggest that Fred's bending the rules. But the fact remains, there is a buzz about our program right now, a buzz that Iowa City doesn't have.

Of course that means nothing if winning does not come along with it, but thusfar, Fred has put us on the right path.

And then we can ask them how many people go to their basketball games.

Just to play devil's advocate, wouldn't that response be arguing that the ends justify the means, and actually playing into their argument that we have cheating going on?

I don't think that's the case you want to build. That little comeback comes right back to you, and they've got you.

The argument there, is that both schools have most recently tried to go the choir boy route, and look where both programs are. Not saying that Fred is breaking any rules, but you have to play the game if you want to win. Iowa went the safe route again with Frannie Mac. ISU is taking a risk. I don't think either fanbase would argue with that statement.

I've got two words for whoever thinks our program is "playing the game" to get these recruits - Fred Hoiberg. You think after seeing the kind of man he is people would stop these stupid allegations. You think Fran is clean? Fred is just a quality character but with better leadership skills.

For what it's worth, when I refered to "playing the game" in my prior post, I was not suggesting that any rules were being bent or broken. I was referring to Fred's targeting of talented, yet riskier recruits.

That would be the answer. I like what Janny is saying, too. In no way am I trying to say we're cheating or playing on the dark side. I just wanted the guy to understand that he was walking into an "end justifies the means" argument.

I love that we're taking a chance on these guys. Most of them, I don't think we're even taking much of a chance.

From the first time I met Coach FH (first semester class in college), he has been an honorable person. Good person and has worked hard to get where he is at. How many NBA GM's come back to coach college ball? He does have connections, and that alone will pay dividends. I hope the new transfers can gel.

Fred just added a guy who scored 20 in an Elite 8 game.

If this is a bad move, I'll guess I'll admit I'm wrong, if/when it goes south.

Very true. My boss who is a "huge" Iowa fan was telling me how pathetic ISU is for not selling out every home game in football. I replied with "Our fanbase is 25% of yours. I think 48,000 isn't too bad for second fiddle in a small state." He continued to ignore the fact that Iowa has many many many more fans statewide and just pinned the empty seats on fairweather, fickle fans. At which point I asked how many BBall players he could name that go to Iowa. He couldn't name one! NOT ONE!!! That is pathetic. I'm sure there are scores of "hardcore" Iowa fans that conveniently only focus on football. To me, that is worse than having a small fanbase.
Also, he admitted to having not been to a game of any type in many many years and that he doesn't watch the games on t.v., just reads about them in the paper or watches the news. HUGE Iowa fan.

Threads go in the direction they may, but all I was trying to show was that the proof is in the puddin! Fred can flat out recruit and his connections to the NBA are very strong and mean a lot to these kids. The level of athelete that he has proven to be able to get already with the 4 xfers is a huge step up from what we are used to.

Although these kids havent played a day in a Clone uniform, they are NOT considered "under the radar" or "diamond in the rough" types. FH is going to compete with all the big boyz to get the best players.

Will it always work out? Probably not, but he's surpassed my wildest recruiting expectations already! Very exciting time to be around CLONE BBALL!

FH has really grown on me over the last several months with his recruiting. But if he really wants to get me - just win, baby...
