Kevin Weiberg out as Big 12 Commish?

WHB's Kevin Keitzman is reporting that Weiberg is going to resign as Big 12 commish this afternoon. All of the Big 12 schools are bickering over money and Weiberg has had enough.

Re: Kevin Weiberg out as Big 12 Commish?

    That's certainly interesting.

I don't have an opinion on the guy really. I think our bowl connections could be better, obviously need a better TV deal (the new one doesn't impress me much) and a few other things could be better.

Yet our conference isn't falling apart. It's kinda staying the status quo.

Hmmm...maybe I liken him to BVD - just going with the flow - not trying to step too far outside the box.

But again, I don't know much about the guy, how long he's been around and what he's done in his tenure.

I feel the same way. Maybe a cross between BVD and McCarney. This guy did some good things but peaked, and now doesn't seem to have much of a desire to Improve so much as not screw up. I don't think any of his major moves like the TV deals have been impressive, although every one has been spun to be amazing. The conference needs a Pollard type leader in my opinion. Shake it up and make some noise. Stop taking a back seat to other conferences.

Yeah, as good as it would favor ISU to have JP as the Big XII commish, we need him as our AD!!!

Re: Kevin Weiberg out as Big 12 Commish?

I will admit, when CC mentioned the Big 12 needs a Pollard type, I got a bit tense. While he doesn't have a Big 12 commish resume - I have no doubt he could do the job well.

It's highly, highly unlikely, yet lets hope the Big 12 doesn't come calling.

Re: Kevin Weiberg out as Big 12 Commish?

WHB's Kevin Keitzman reported that Pollard is still trying to push the full revenue sharing when it comes to football and obvisouly the Big Boys are resisting.

Here's a rundown of TV revenue money that Big 12 schools received in 05-06 and the gap between Texas and the bottom isn't that huge that was in the Omaha World Hearld last month:

    Big 12 Allocation (2005-06)
    1, Texas $9.68 million
    2, Oklahoma $9.09 million
    3, Texas A&M $8.23 million
    4, Nebraska$7.81 million
    5, Colorado $7.64 million
    6, Iowa State $7.34 million
    7, Kansas $7.28 million
    8, Texas Tech $6.79 million
    9, Baylor $6.63 million
    10, Oklahoma State $6.62 million
    11, Missouri $6.53 million
    12, Kansas State $6.47 million

Re: Kevin Weiberg out as Big 12 Commish?

The difference between ISU and Texas is almost 7% of our entire athletic budget. It's not that huge, but when you're talking that much money it could have a huge impact at ISU and really help us upgrade our facilities.

If that's true, that's an average of 7.51 Mil per school. It has to lend some credibility that pollard is fighting for the good of the conference when the change wouldn't impact ISU much at all.

Averaging all those together gets about $7.5 spread out equally to all the schools, so it's easy to see why the likes of Texas and OU wouldn't want to miss out on $2 million to pad their athletic wallets. The move certainly wouldn't help ISU out a whole lot considering they'd gain about $200,000 dollars.

    EDIT: 1,000th post! Wooo!

Keep in mind, that was '05/'06. I'll bet we were a bit further down on the list for '06/'07.

I doubt he's tired of the bickering over money. I'm betting JP lured him away to be on the ISU AD staff.

Me neither...especially after those comments he made just prior to March Madness earlier this year. It was during a TV interview that ran here locally, and KW was asked if he was out promoting the Big 12 in order to help them get better seeds in the tourney. His reply was something like, "No, because whenever I get those press releases from the other conferences, I just throw them away." Way to promote your conference, Kevin!

Also, some were trying to make a connection between the lack of conference promotion by the Big 12 front office and Gillepie's leaving aTm, but I don't know if there is any validity to that.

As someone mentioned before, I think the Big 12 needs a more proactive commish, especially when it comes to conference promotion.

Exactly! The current administrators weren't proactive at all and I just don't think that will cut it when you are leading a conference that doesn't have the built in advantages of something like the Big 10's population base.

Speaking of the Big 10. Weiberg is leaving to become the "Vice President of University Planning and Development with the Big Ten Network" according to the Big 12 website.
