I see this a being big mistake for BYU. They are not anywhere near the team/school ND is. However, if they work out some deal like ND does it may benefit them. FWIW, I dislike the treatment ND gets.

I know a lot of people don't care for them, but I do feel a little bad for Boise State. They took the best possible move they had available to them to try and legitimately earn BCS berths and it has immediately gone to crap due to forces outside their control.

Re: The MWC is about to go boom....

Not grabbing BYU to replace or exceed what was lost with Colorado...is yet another sign that the Big 12 is about what is best for Texas. Not what is best for continued existence of the Big 12. Not what is best for all the schools. Not what is best to deter a movement toward 4 mega football conferences.

Four months ago there were 5 clear cut major football conferences. The Big East and MWC were also major in that the both produced regular top 5-10 ranked teams but they were clearly below the other five 12-10 team leagues.

A few months later the MWC is crumbling and we're down to 5 major players and one minor player. This is not good people. Not good if you want to avoid a 4 mega-conference scenario that ISU could easily be left out of.

5-10 years down the road when there's another shakeup, we'd be better off with BYU in the Big 12 or better off with the MWC being a BCS level conference. Neither of those happened and now we'll be in a weaker position.

It's simple math here people. Four sixteen team conferences is the goal of people who could give a flying $hit if ISU is left out in the cold. 7 BCS conferences would have put them further away from their goal than 6 BCS conferences. The Big East is the easieste to dismantle because it's only 8 teams, we're now the second easiest to dismantle because we only have ten. We could have moved from 10 to 11 without sacrificing a bit of quality... but we didn't because it doesn't help Texas. It's sad that so many of you see the narrative from the Texas/media position and not from ISU's position.

Exactly... BYU is really the only piece of the MWC that might have a fit in the big 12.. and if theyre going independent\wac, theres nobody left to bring in really.

    Air Force
    Colorado State
    New Mexico
    San Diego State
    TCU
    UNLV
    Wyoming
    Boise State

Would any of these make sense to add? Doesnt look like it to me, not unless it was with a substantially reduced conference payout.

At this point, I'd say BYU is the superior team, and have been for a while. ND is constantly overhyped. Plus, they have a donor base that has to be enormous.

I agree with you, but the ACC is actually easier to dismantle than the Big East. Their teams are more desirable. FSU, Miami, and Clemson to the SEC. BC, Maryland, and GT to the Big 10. If super-conferences happen, I think the ACC is gonna get raided big time with the Big East only losing 1-2 schools in UConn, Rutgers, or Syracuse. The Big East can then pick up the scraps of the ACC and Big 12 to be the 4th super-conference.

I realize my scenario adds schools that are already in the SEC footprint, but the SEC makes its money off being the best conference, not its footprint like the Big 10.

Georgia Tech to the Big Ten? That makes no sense to me.

I agree that the Big XII is on shaky ground and the shelf life may not be very long - that is why I wanted BYU. Adding BYU could possibly help if one (UT, OU, TAM or whoever leave) or if 4 schools left. Even if 4 schools left (UT, TAM, OU & OSU) we would have 7 schools left and could invite Louisville, Memphis, Cinci or TCU to round out a conference of schools loyal to each other. ISU is in a very precarious position and I'm sure JP is probably all over this and doing everything he can.

I agree, but it has been talked about a lot. GT adds a southern school to the Big 10 who has good athletics and academics.

Not inviting BYU to the Big XII was the right decision today, but will we think it's the right decision in 10 years?

You have yet to demonstrate how adding BYU to the Big 12 is better for ISU or for the Big 12.

It is simple, I'll give you that. If the large schools (and their political constituents) collectively decide that there should be four superconferences, 50 BCS conferences wouldn't stop it from happening...
