    Disease sidelines ex-Cyclone Carstens

    DMR story concerning Carstens.

Charlotte, N.C. - Jordan Carstens came to practice late last season thinking he had pulled a muscle in his rib cage. The problem was much more serious.

The Carolina reserve defensive tackle and former Iowa State standout spent the next week in the hospital with a blood clot on his left lung. Seven months later, doctors are still trying to find the right medicine to treat his kidney disease so he can play in the NFL again.

Tough bout for Carstens - yet he's always been a very, very hard worker. NFL guys love that and Carolina is doing the "right thing" by standing by him.

A great success story, I hope this kidney issue doesn't end it.

That's a bum deal. I went to HS with Jordan and I know what a great guy and hard worker he's been. His wife used to work here during the draft so I was always asking what they were hearing. After he didn't get drafted the next morning I find out about 5 or 7 teams called right after the draft but they easy pick for them was Carolina because they really liked the defensive coaches there after meeting with them. I hope they can treat this so he can continue playing.

I'll bet you one thing though, regardless when his playing days end he'll probably be back here in Iowa farming with his family. I know he still comes back once in awhile during the offseason to help out and he'd probably be doing that right now if he wasn't playing FB.

I can vouch for that Trav - I used to build grain bins and we built some huge ones for his family. I actually met him one time when he was working on some hog confinements by us. I'll never forget the Cartsens rendering barrell - truly a heinous sight.

They have a big operation too Bryce as I'm sure you saw, it's not small time farming. I know for sure they have several spots in Guthrie and Dallas counties both hog confinements and lots of farm land. I wouldn't even be surprised if they have land in Greene county too, I'm not sure exactly how big they are really but most people in the area there at least have heard of them.
