Here are some additional thoughts on the future of the ISU-Iowa football game with conference schedule changes seemingly on the horizon.

As always, comments and questions are welcome.

Take it from a 'Clone who was at the 1977 game when the series renewed after a 34-year hiatus; the game should be played every year. It's a good rivalry; it's fun and it's good for the state.

I would rather have Iowa on the schedule every year, even it if means an occasional loss, than to drop them in favor of a crappy team to help us go 6-6 and get in to a lousy, blue-turf bowl.

Wow, that would have been cool!
I was at the 1998 game when we finally snapped the 15-year losing streak. Which also happened to be my birthday. That was an excellent birthday.

The '98 game was unbelievable as I never thought we'd get to beat Raisin Face Fry.

But I can't tell you how intense the buildup was for the '77 game. Of all the games I attended in the series, this was fierce - a lot of smack talk and every night leading up to the game all the local stations highlighted the buildup. ABC had it their regional game - which in the late 70's was special; there was no Cable, or the exclusive contracts as nowadays.

Iowa demanded the first three games of the series be played in Iowa City; at the time the contract was signed (1973), Jack Trice was only in the Blueprint stage, so the Hawks didn't want to play in Clyde Williams.

We had one of our best teams in history that year; an unbelievable D-Line, 1st Team Big 8 RB in Dexter Green, and we went 8-3 the previous year. But our starting QB got hurt in preseason and we had to start John Quinn - a freshman from Des Moines.

The deal was, Iowa also got their QB hurt and they started their own freshman - the coach's kid, from Iowa City High School; and he was crappy. I couldn't believe we lost 12-10. A real boring game, not much offense, all the scoring was in the first half. And our kicker missed a 43-yd FG in the 4th Q, and neither team threatened after. That loss still haunts me.

Good article. The ISU joke in there was funny. I hadn't heard that one before. "How many ISU fans does it take to screw in a light bulb?" "3, one to screw in the light bulb and the other 2 to talk about how great Seneca Wallace was." Funny.
