    Any iPad users?

Due to some remodeling we've done we relocated our family's "main" desktop PC to the basement. We were thinking of getting a cheap laptop for upstairs just for checking email and stuff but after speaking with a co-worker and seeing her iPad in action, I think an iPad might be a better option. The price is definitely in the same range as a laptop and I think it provides even more flexibility. Any opinions?

If you'll mainly be using it for email/internet, definitely check out the Acer netbook. I love mine.

I think just the opposite. I would think a laptop would provide a lot more flexibility?

    Re: Any iPad users?

I use it on the couch every day and while traveling.

On the couch I web surf, email, twitter, and use Reeder (Google Reader app).

While traveling I use it on the plane for watching video and music. Traveling email and web. At the hotel I use it for video. Hulu, Netflix, and ABC player.

It won't support flash from what i understand so you cannot watch any online videos unless it is in the new Apple video format.

Completely untrue. My co-worker demonstrated Netflix and Hulu over our office wi-fi.

    Re: Any iPad users?

Actually, it has quite a bit of flexibility. I use it at work and at home. It puts any laptop battery to shame. I go days without charging it (way different from the iphone). As far as flash, everyone jumps on that badwagon about how it doesn't have it, but so many websites are using HTML5 video now that it doesn't affect you a whole lot. Even videos on espn work flawlessly without having to open another page. I highly recommend one!

Agree. iPad is a neat toy but a good little laptop offers much more versatility.

    Re: Any iPad users?

It really depends on how you will primarily use it. For personal entertainment, the iPad will be the way to go. (web surfing, reading books, watching videos, playing games, etc).

If you plan on doing a lot of email or more business type work, I'd stick with a netbook/laptop. Typing emails regularly on the iPad gets pretty annoying and frustrating.

Each option will have it's strengths and weaknesses, but my guess is you'll be pretty happy with either.

It all depends on what you're looking for. The user interface is completely different, as far as I'm concerned you can't really compare the two directly. People looking for one kind of user experience are going to gravitate toward the iPad, and others to netbooks.

Killing Flash might be the best thing Apple has ever done. The sites I visit it hasn't been a problem. Even on my desktop computer I run FlashBlock for Chrome so sites can't load Flash; unless I let them.

    Exactly. They do different things.

I have a desktop computer, 17" laptop, and iPad. They all have their tasks.

If I could only one and had to pick 17" laptop or iPad I'd go 17" laptop. I couldn't give up my full size laptop. If I had to pick between iPad or netbook I'd go iPad. But that's just me and for how I use computers.

    Re: Any iPad users?

I understand where using an Ipad outside of the house may make sense. I've yet to figure out why anyone would want to use an Ipad instead of a laptop at home?

Is it easier to type on an Ipad than a keyboard? I know there are keyboards for the Ipad but doesn't that defeat the purpose?

Is the performance better on a Ipad?

Are there USB ports? How do you get around this when you want to do something like trasnfer photo's?

Can you video chat with an Ipad?

    64gb of data?

    How do you play CD/DVD's?

This may sound kind of dumb but when I'm using my laptop at home 99% of the time I'm sitting in a recliner or couch and the laptop sits on my lap. In situations like this where does the Ipad "sit".

It sounds like the battery is a lot better, able to run apps, and it looks cool.

I've had similar issues when I've considered buying a netbook.

My laptop was on a stand in my living room. Always on. Only left the room when I went on trips. Now it's just for trips.

Most of the time I'm not typing a novel at my couch. I'm surfing the web, twitter, news, and Google Reader. My personal email is usually more read and delete or archive. I don't need to type all that much.

I pretty much always have mine in landscape mode. I usually am holding it with one hand and scrolling/tapping with the other. It's in my lap and when I'm not using it I throw it on the couch next to me or wherever.

Twitter I'm mainly reading. If I tweet the iPad keyboard is more than good enough.

CF again I'm mainly reading. Outside of a thread like this I don't need a full keyboard to type a few comments.

News and Google Reader I'm reading.

In all the cases where I'm reading I'd rather read and scroll with the iPad than a laptop.

I've never thought "I wish this had USB". HDMI yes, USB no. HDMI would be great for hooking the iPad to a hotel tv. My natural flow is my iPhone/Android phone takes most of my pictures. Those get moved into iPhoto when I sync with iTunes. I like a desktop with a huge monitor for this. My Nikon pictures I import when I feel like it. Again they end up in iPhoto. Usually a bunch get deleted or cleaned up. At some point my iPad syncs and it gets the photos. I really don't think much about the whole process.

The iPad is lighter and less in the way. Throw it wherever. I don't have to hear my wife complain that company is coming over so get that laptop, stand, charger, and stuff out of the living room. There is just something about touch and scrolling that way that works better and is more enjoyable.

I'm looking forward to Android/ChromeOS tablets and Win7 tablets pushing this all further along.
