Simple program to make computer games?

My son is really interested in making his own game. I downloaded a program a while back but it was way too complex (for me anyway). Anyone know of a program that might work for this? He's 12, and seems to naturally understand computers.

start him off with a game where he can create his own level. I can't think of any easy computer languages for a 12 year old.

I haven't used Game Maker, but you might give it a go and see if that's something that would keep his attention.

He should try a free editor that comes with a few games. The game Torchlight, Gears of War, Crysis and StarCraft II all have in-game editors.

Re: Simple program to make computer games?

He's probably better off building levels for existing games, or doing simple games in Flash or HTML5.

The low level programming for current 3D games is astonishingly complicated. It's sort of like asking "is there a simple way for my son to build an F-35 and fly it". There are people who's entire careers are dealing with textures that get applied to 3D objects before you even begin to take the gameplay into account.

Re: Simple program to make computer games?

Does he have an xbox? C# is not an easy language to pick up (if you have no programming experience, but if learns it early he will be a step above), but microsoft has xna game studio which allows you to build games for pc or upload them to xbox. There are some fairly good tutorials to go with it. If he wants to do it, it takes like anything pratice. Also, if gets into programming stackoverflow.com is the best place to ask questions, and get great answers.

Re: Simple program to make computer games?

What type of games does he want to create? There are a few applications that you could create a game with minimal programming knowledge or anything. If he wants to learn to program though, I'm going to tell you creating games is not the first place to start unless they're very simple games. 3D games with real life physics, for example, are very hard to create. Funny thing was when I started computer science, there were about 200-300 people in my class and about 10 of us graduated. Most everyone else dropped out because they wanted to create games (like first person shooter games) but didnt realize how hard it actually is and they couldn't get programming text based games down in the first place.

If he is 12 and interested in computers and programming in general, I would get him on creating simple stuff first and easier languages like BASIC/QBASIC or Python. I know it's not creating Halo, but he'll probably understand things better by programming simple things first.

FPS, of course. He seems to have a natural ability around the computer (he installs mods on his Star Wars computer games for himself after I gave up trying). I browsed around earlier, and came up with this site:

The Game Creators - Make Your Own Game - Computer - Design and Making Software

From the little I could tell, it sounded like some of those programs are pre-built so that he could "design" his own games without having to get too in-depth. I may try to do one of those, plus a very basic learning program. Obviously it wouldn't be a bad thing for him if it led to a future career in computers.

You can design and create your own levels. They can get complex, or they can be simple.

Also you can download other people's levels and share your own.

Right, there are some he can use to "design" games. I don't do them or anything, but I remember in the 90s there were things to make RPGs and stuff.

The stuff you linked to looks pretty cool too...a lot better than what we had in the 90s, lol.

12 years old is when I started programming too. I wanted to create games, but at the same time I liked math so I created useless **** like a "screen saver" in QBASIC and a program to check if an ISBN code you input (like on a bar code) is valid or not. I then went to Visual Basic because it's Windows and not DOS, but still relatively easy to create cool things. Created really cool stuff like media players, web browsers, etc. It was actually very fun..

If your son has a natural inclination for math/logic and actually LIKES it, learning some programming will not only make sense to him but it might challenge him a little.

Re: Simple program to make computer games?

Just downloaded a demo of FPS Creator. My concern- it won't work without disabling the UAC (user account controls) which let you know when a program is making changes to computer. Is that normal, or should I be suspicious? The message that came up said that some programs cannot run with that enabled, but I'm not sure how common that is?

Oh- and we will be getting Little Big Planet too, as that looks like a lot of fun
