I'm telling you, Ames is going to become the Thunderdome pretty soon. If I was there, I would be hoarding gasoline and putting spikes on some shoulder pads.

*I completely understand the severity of the situation and my sympathies go out to all that have been affected. I am not trying to make light of the scenario.

So....if I've been doing laundry you think contamination will effect anything?

    Thanks for posting this Chris!

They didn't confirm that any contamination had occurred. Boiling water at this point is a practical precaution as I read it. I wouldn't worry about your laundry either way.

Unless they can somehow contain that break - seal it off from the rest of the system, cleaning out the system could take quite a while.

Thanks. I've forgotten about the smiley faces too. I wasn't too worried

Sounds like if you are drinking or washing food it should be boiled.

Very important lesson learned... NEVER pass up the opportunity to acquire a bottle of Templeton Rye... NEVER.

Better get to the store fast...people are panicking. My friend in Ames posted this pic on Facebook, taken from an Ames store:

Exactly. Fixing the break is the easy part. If the water tower was completely drained, they will likely have to flush, chlorinate, and test the area served by the tower and possibly more.

If you can acquire one of these: MSR MIOX

I would highly recommend it. I have one. It can do large amounts of water with a camera battery and some rock salt. The Marines use it, and it is purportedly strong enough to take VX gas out of water. I know JAX in Ames has them for sale.
