    Sandbagging at Hilton

Some Ames Residents Urged To Evacuate - Local News - Des Moines, IOWA - Des Moines - msnbc.com

"At 1:30 Wednesday morning, KCCI's Ames Bureau reporter Angie Hunt said work crews were busily sandbagging Hilton Coliseum, the basketball arena on the Iowa State University campus. She said the building is surrounded by water but she does not believe any water has gotten inside Hilton"

    Re: Sandbagging at Hilton

Did they sandbag Hilton in '93, or did the water rise too fast to do anything that time? Just wondering if they think they can keep the water out of Hilton to any seriously damaging heights like they saw in '93.

Yeah - they sandbagged but to little avail. Just too much. In the end, the lower bowl was a giant pool.

I remember Veenker in '93. Whatever that green is at the corner of Stang and 13th was whitewater. Wouldn't have envied you guys. I worked for Ames Parks and Rec - Brookside and River Valley were no joy either...

Could this be a sign that Fred Hoiberg is truly the Messiah, ordering a flood to purge the Iowa State basketball world of the unfaithful and to wash away all of the 'bad mojo' in Hilton? Probably not.

If this is what the program needs to cleanse the bad mojo so the program can go to the big dance regularly, I think most fans will take it

Curious that we seem to be having 100 year floods every 15-20 years these days.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

In the post mortem, I remember there being something about an improperly constructed driveway/ramp into the basement of Hilton. That driveway washed out and the water poured in. Up until then, the sandbags were supposedly holding...

On the east side, there's that loading ramp which acted as little more than a spillway. Just weren't going to win that battle.

We've probably had 5 in the past 15-20 years. I know we've had at least 3.

Edit: Then again, perhaps after our annual century floods in the 90's, they may have "re-evaluated" the criteria of 100 year flood?
