Cubs Call Up Hoffpauir and Castillo

Chicago Cubs call up Micah Hoffpauir, Welington Castillo from Iowa | desmoinesregister.com | The Des Moines Register

Hoffpauir has been on a tear lately, hope he can carry it over with the big Cubs while Lee is on bereavement as I'm sure Lee is not going to be a Cub next year so it's time for Micah to make a case to stay in Chicago in some form next year. Soto to the DL, Castillo has a great arm so will be good to see what he can do splitting time with Koyie Hill. I'm ready to see some of these young guys get a shot with the Cubs season in the tank these days and as bad as the offense has been lately might as well see what the kids can do who will be playing for roster spots next year. I'm guessing Snyder, LaHair, and Barney will all get September call ups at some point too.

The Cubs 40-man roster is full and none of those three are on it, so it isn't likely.

Never know, someone like Nady could wind up being released or traded away in a waiver wire deal or something to open up a spot. Jeff Baker nearly got cut when they let Chad Tracy go. I would think at least 1 if not maybe 2 of those 3 they find a way to get a callup as well as they have been hitting. Snyder is right there with Hoffpauir .312 18 HR 84 RBI and LaHair .312 19 HR 66 RBI. Barney is hitting .298 and leads the PCL in fielding percentage, he may be the least likely of the 3 but if Baker is cut he could slide in as the utility guy possibly.

So much dead weight on this team with Nady, Fukudome, Baker, Fontenot (although I think he's OK as a utility infielder) and you have overpriced and underachieving guys like Soriano, Lee, and Ramirez blocking some spots too. The pitching staff is a mess now, almost every other day someone is being called up or sent down it seems like.

Right now I think these are the only spots you can put in ink for next season:

    SS: Castro
OF: Soriano (only because he is too hard to trade) Colvin, and Byrd. I think they find a way to dump Fukudome somehow even if they eat most of his contract.
3B: Ramirez (same as Soriano, I believe either this year or next he has an opt out right?)
2B: DeWitt - nothing special but he's cheap
    C: Soto

P: Marmol, Marshall, probably Cashner despite his recent struggles, Zambrano cuz he's too hard to trade, Dempster, and probably Gorzelanny and Wells and Grabow because they are under contract.

This basically means they are in the market for or promote through minors a starting 1B, maybe 2B too if you can upgrade over DeWitt, a 4th and 5th OF, probably at least 2 rotation spots, utility infielder or 2, and several bullpen jobs. I'd like to see a few of the AAA guys get a chance to see what they have as I don't think there is a shortage of capable MLB OF in the system right now and guys like Snyder could at least be a decent 4th or 5th OF you'd think.

I love DLee but if the Cubs are thinking Hoffpauir is going to compete for 1B next yr they need to play him and sit Lee. Hopefully Castillo gets most of the time behind the plate because Hill stinks.

I'll have serious problems if Hoffpauir is our starting 1B next year. He is fine as a bench player as he could provide some pop off the bench.

I had real high hopes for him when he first came up. He was tearing it up in spot starts and off the bench. Then last year and most of this year he hasn't been too great. Hopefully he has gotten over whatever the problem was and can prove to be an everday 1st baseman. I too, love DLee, but i think its time to move on.

I think the Cubs will go after a power hitting lefty to play 1B next year. Will be some available in free agency or through trade this offseason.

I see the Cubs signing one of Dunn, Pena or LaRoche this off season.

Re: Cubs Call Up Hoffpauir and Castillo

Hoffpauir isn't the answer... they're trying to get younger. Micah is 30. He'll be 31 when we start the season next year. Not the answer at all. That's only 4 years younger then Lee.

You win. Fontenot traded for minor leaguer, Barney called up.
