    OWH article about Phillip Bates

Football: Omaha North grad, ex-ISU QB bids for Ohio job - Omaha.com

I did a search, and could not find any mention of this. I know most are probably content to never hear anything about Phillip Bates ever again, but it is an interesting read nevertheless. I imagine he probably wishes he had waited just a few more weeks, as I think his beef was only with Chizik, and Chizik was about to leave anyway. I can't help but wonder how he'd be doing under CPR.

Re: OWH article about Phillip Bates

My guess - he wouldn't have fared much better. He was only interested in playing QB, and he wasn't going to beat out Arnaud, regardless under Chizik or CPR.

It would sure be nice to have him playing safety or at wideout right now. He's never going to play pro as a QB.

If I'm not mistaken, his dad believes that he'll be a pro as a QB.

Bates quit on his team and there's no excuse for that. But he was lied to and jerked around and made an emotional, vengeful snap decision. I bet he wishes he'd done it differently. Chizik crapped on a really nice kid. Would have been better for Bates to sign elsewhere after Mac's staff got chased in favor of the cast of Deliverance.

You're not mistaken. His dad (and young Phillip) both believe that. It's never going to happen. He's a terrific athlete, but he will never even get a sniff at being a pro QB. He's going to have a tough enough time starting at Ohio.

    Hilarious.

You're completely right though. Bates did quit on the team, but I don't think Chizik could have handled that situation any worse. Burning his redshirt when he shouldn't have (granted, I'll always be thankful for that catch against iowa) will forever remain an awful decision.

I get that Chiz wanted to get him on the field, but Chiz was playing with house money that first season, there was no reason to rush to get an athlete like Bates on the field.

    (Isn't hindsight great?)

I liked Bates and I was always rooting for him until he left. I will be very curious to see how successful he is at Ohio. I never felt like he got a fair shake but leaving mid-season is inexcusable.

Probably would have a shot at the NFL at safety, not so much at QB.

I was wondering about him... I actually hope he gets the starting job, it would be fun to watch him play and see what he can do in the MAC.

bates is a good running back or a receiver. chizzy **** should have had him in the backfield with arnaud.hell the kid was big and fast.he could not pass as well as arnaud, but bates may make a running qb on the nebraska type football that solich plays.hated to see him leave iowa state.old man bates should have kept his nose out of pollard's business and left chizzle **** coach his kid.

He has some big shoes to fill if he does make starter. Theo Scott was nasty.

Re: OWH article about Phillip Bates

How about that article stating that Bates was the de facto starter two years ago? I seem to recall that the position was open at the beginning of the season, and Arnaud proved to be the most reliable option and starter by the time Bates left.
