    Interesting take on oversigning

Bad guys utilize over-signing, and it has to stop - NCAA Football - CBSSports.com

It's an interesting look at a practice I really don't care for, anyway.

I skimmed the article and I'm glad it's out there but really I blame these players as much as these coaches. If you know anything at all about Ole Miss and Houston Nutt you know that he does this, so why sign there in the first place?

That's a good question. It should be obvious to these guys and their parents that Nutt isn't in it for them.

Surprised to see ISU's name in that article but that might have more to do with having 3 coaches in five years.

We really shouldn't be throwing stones at any schools on this subject.

Did the kid (a LB?) that we really wanted 2 years ago who ended up in an over signed class at Ole Miss ever see the field?

I guess these numbers lose a lot of their significance without knowledge of how many slots each program had available each year. 25 is the max each year, right? But how many of these programs signed 5 or 6 over what they had available on a particular year?

I don't ever recall hearing about ISU taking scholarships away from players after they've signed. ISU ends up signing more players due to JUCO's and academic casualties. The problem with the SEC is that they sign 30 players even though they know that they can only take 25. ISU is just trying to keep a full roster.

DMac oversigned quite a bit. He did a lot of sign and place. Thing is the kkids rarely, if ever, came to ISU after JUCO.

On the flip side, most greyshirts at ISU understand they are greyshirting before they sign on. Where as in the SEC greyshiritng happens after the fact.

The difference being we don't run off players to get under the 85 limit. Most of our oversignign is due to attrition, coaching turnover, or taking chances on academically ineligible players. I cannot think of one instance where we had mor ehtan 25 report and we had to make room.

The difference becomes the fact we aren't accepting them and then cutting them. IMO, "oversigning" is when you offer and receieve a commitment and then force the kid to grayshirt or even worse, not allow him into school such as Les Miles has done. We oversign because not everyone will make it or we end up having room. Houston Nutt oversigns for the hell of it.

It depends. Oversigning is actually a misleading term for this. It's not about how many sign in a class, it's about how many you let into the institution and how you do it. If a kid has a grayshirt offer and he knows it all along, then there isn't anything ethically wrong with it. If a kid doesn't make the grades and goes JUCO, it isn't unethical. It become a problem when you sign 30 guys that make it and you only have room for 25. Then you have to get rid of 5 scholarships from somewhere. IMO, this whole thing is about the student athlete and IMO, as long as you aren't taking scholarships away from current players or current signess, I don't see a problem.
