    DL Starters

With Nelson red shirting this season i went through and projected out my starting D-line.

    DE's:
    Parker
    Neal

    In the middle:
    Ruempolhamer
    Johnson

Parker seems to be our only "player maker" on the line(obviously because we have not played a game yet) but Neal has a motor and plays his butt off every play like we saw last year. I see McDonough coming in when either Stephen or Bailey need a rest. I was hesitant to put Neal as the starter at DE. I think Neal and Lattimer will end up splitting time at that side of the DE spot. I think thats why coach Rhoads ended up putting Lattimer there offically today. I'm not sure who will end up winning the spot, but i'm sure that they will figure that out by the time Big 12 play starts. And my player to make a surprise impact is going to be Taylor Mansfield. I have heard nothing but good things about him in the weight room.

Jake McDonough will start at DT and have an impact. JM was supposedly turning heads this spring. Rump and Bailey will rotate at NG.

A little off topic, but does anyone else get the feeling that our defense is slowly turning into Iowa's defense? Guys like McDounogh remind me of a Kroul or King type with Knott and Klein looking like an Edds or Greenway type.

Maybe thats why I feel so good about this defense.

I've been thinking about that with our line backers.

I get the feeling that our defense is turing into Wally Burnham's defense as over-seen by Paul Rhoads. Now, imagine that you're telling that to someone from Florida or Alabama but you don't tell them the team is in Ames; they're going to be impressed. Wally, Shane and Paul will build the best defense that's ever been in Ames.

edit; John is looking old in that pic.

I'm curious to see what Walter Woods will bring to the table. He played LB in high school, so I'm guessing he has decent athleticism and speed for an interior d lineman.

Can we stop with the constent comparisions to UI - how about they are starting to look like they could be a good defense and with time a very good defense.

Bailey Johnson is gonna have a huge year from what I have heard from someone on the team.

I've been thinking the same thinking too about Walter Woods. If he can physically handle what it takes to be a Big 12 DT/NG, then we should have a solid 4 man rotation in Jake McDonough, Walter Woods, Rump & B. Johnson.

Patrick Neal really is starting to remind me off Shawn Moorehead in that he started of undersized at the position, isn't the biggest or fastest guy, but he has a motor and plays at 110%.
