    Villanova Football to Big East?

Big East developing plans for TV network

    Last Paragraph
Marinatto again dismissed the Internet rumors that Central Florida and Memphis were going to receive invitations to join the conference, but he said that there have been some discussions about Villanova making the jump to Division I-A football and that could be one viable option for the conference to grow without upsetting its 16-team basketball alignment.
Interesting idea since Nova is the defending D1-AA champ and the favorite to repeat.

I'm pretty sure that's not possible unless they expand their stadium. Their capacity is too small right now.

They could play at The Linc or something. There are ways around that. Their biggest problem is that they only average 8,000 people per game and you need 15,000 for two straight years to move up to D1-A.

The Big East has done it before with USF and UConn. Central Flordia, ECU, or Memphis would make more sense, but they don't want to upset the balance between the 8 football and 8 basketball schools. The football schools really need to break away from the bball schools.

You're also supposed to have a 15K average once every two years in order to stay I-A. By that alone, there should have been 7-10 teams dropped from I-A recently.

Get Penn State and Pitt to play there a couple of times 15000 problem solved.

Pit and Penn St might do it as a chance to play at a NFL stadiun in Philly.

Doesn't Pitt already play at an NFL stadium? And Penn St. plays in a huge stadium, tens of thousands bigger than 90% of NFL stadiums.

Yeah...I really don't see Penn St. leaving Happy Valley for anything.

Re: Villanova Football to Big East?

The Big East needs to lose its BCS Automatic Qualifier status if this happens. That conference is already so far behind the SEC, Big 12, Big 10 etc. in terms of quality teams. No other power conference would even be discussing adding a team from 1-AA.

They would if it were an elite basketball program, great academic school, a member of the conference for several years and was located in a great recruiting area. This is a unique situation that the other bcs conferences won't have. I'm sure the transition wouldn't be automatic, if you look at the past this is exactly what happened when the added UCONN. That worked out fine, they would play an indpedant schedule for a few years until they got facilities upgraded and schollies filled etc... It's pretty narrow minded to think its not a great idea.

Villanova could beat a lot of teams in D1-A. They are the defending D1-AA champs.

Its the same thing that happened with UConn, but they were no where near as good as Villanova is now in D1-AA. UConn lost 5 games last year by a combined 15 points too.

3-11 against I-A since 1985. Two wins against Temple ('03 and '09), and one against Rutgers (in '02, when Rutgers went 1-11).

15 years is not really accurate. They just won their first championship in 2009. Their 1-2 in the last 3 years. Appalachian State and UNI have proven that the top teams in D1-AA can beat any team in D1-A on any given day. Just ask Michigan..... or ISU.

Like I said before, UConn was worse at D1-AA than Nova is currently.
