Fill me in on some ISU history

I'm seeing these elite programs running in trouble with the NCAA like OU, Alabama and USC and got to thinking. Perhaps Iowa State has never been that great because they don't cheat. So I ask; has Iowa State ever been on probation, any major violations committed? Your thoughts on my theory...

For the record, my knowledge of Cyclone football only goes back a decade.

Look up Jim Criner. He got us into some trouble. We got the trouble but without that pesky winning.

The earily 80s it was in trouble, but still didnt win. I think Floyd may have vistited the gray area a few times.

Re: Fill me in on some ISU history

Jim Criner gets brought up a lot because he supposedly cheated and still couldn't win...but is it really cheating if you give players extra perks after they are here and already established in the program? i realize thats against NCAA conduct, but thats more like rule violations.

When I think cheating in the NCAA I think of the things you do to lure players into the program...or to give your program an unfair advantage over others such as the long Michigan practices...or the SEC oversigning bonanza.

Wasn't Criner and his staff driving the players around, and picking up the tab for some meals and whatnot. How does that make your FB program better?

We don't reminisce, we just keep playing Tecmo Bowl & R.B.I. Baseball! In-depth strategy guides, player attributes, team rankings, along with detailed recaps of our season play. These Nintendo classics are as entertaining now as the day they were released!

Colorado's supposed weed and hooker parties....now that sounds like cheating to bring in top athletes. Top athletes with little conviction about winning football games...

Maybe he promised these benefits during recruiting? This could also be used to keep players from transfering. It's cheating.

I think they loaned a kid some money to fly home to his grandmas funeral. There were some other infractions uncovered in the investigation of the loan. I was far far away when all this took place, so I could be wrong.

Very well, but if Criner only did what I think he did....it was pretty LAME cheating! In that case he should be accosted more so not for the lack of winning, but for sucking at cheating.

I'm not a fan of cheating, but I absolutely think that a person that chooses to cheat needs to be better at it than Jim Criner. The man failed at failing (and yet found success at it).

The screwed up thing with the NCAA is everyone cheats...it's just a matter of who cheats more and if they get caught and if they do does the NCAA do anything about it.

COACH'S LAMENT : Iowa State's Criner Wasn't Prepared for the Storms That Blew Cyclones' Way - Los Angeles Times

Old story on Criner...ISU had some serious internal problems with player behavior at the time. Lots of arrests and such that are never good for a program and how it performs. Although Oklahoma and Miami were great teams in the 80's winning with a criminal element in their midst.

He had a player that was not academically eligible that was taking classes at DMACC in Boone and an Assistant gave him some rides to classes before he was even eligible to be at Iowa State which in the NCAA's mind is an unfare recruiting advantage. There was some other stuff. too.

Re: Fill me in on some ISU history

The scandal that brought down Criner was someone on the football staff was altering/faking Jeff Braswell's grades from DMACC in Boone (then known as Boone Junior College) where Braswell was supposedly taking some make up classes, plus the illegal car rides. Braswell was ISU's best defender, a potential All-American at middle linebacker. Had a monster game vs. Oklahoma at JTS back in 1984 or 85 on ESPN or ABC, and gained considerable national notoriety because of his performance on the field. Unfortunately, Jeff was about as smart as a boulder and the football staff decided to "help" him out grade-wise. Great athlete; poor, poor student.

Anyway, the NCAA came down hard on ISU with a severe three year scholarship reduction (something like 40 to 50 percent) and no TV or bowl games during that time. ISU's football program didn't recover until the middle of McCarney's tenure at ISU.
