    iTunes help

Ok, so I have multiple iPods in my house. The other day I hooked up my wife's iPod to charge it and add a few new songs I had downloaded.

I realized something happened when I lost my complete music library. Completely lost it. So I freaked out and plugged in my iPod. So now the only songs in my library are the ones that were on my iPod. All the albums and playlists are all gone.

Somebody tell me how to fix it!?!?

They are not in your recycle bin, are they?

I know it's too late, but I highly recommend Mozy and/or Carbonite. $5 a month to never have to worry about something like that again. Most hard drives only last 5-7 years, so every computer user will face this eventually. Spend $5 a month and save yourself the agony.

So do you still have all your songs on your Ipod? If not you may be screwed.

I have about half of my library on my iPod. So I'm not at a total loss but we are talking about close to a dozen albums here.

    Re: iTunes help

If you are using a Mac, search itunes in the HD. If the files are there, you can just drag them into itunes.
If the files are gone, they are gone.

If you are using a PC, good luck.

I wonder if you uninstall and then reinstall itunes if it would relocate your library file and your song files. Worth a try.

Do a search either by song title or by file extension (.m4a) and see if you get any hits. I remember having something similar happen on my desktop and my song files were located in the "My Documents" folder.

About 95% of the time, they'll be stored in My Documents -> My Music -> iTunes

    Re: iTunes help

iTunes is set up to work with one IPod. I realized this when I got a new IPod and gave the old one to my mom. Luckily I didnt lose anything.

One suggestion might be to only connect your wife's IPod under a different username when you log onto your home PC. I'm not a guru but I think then the user setting would be different allowing you to sinc the second Ipod without affecting your library under the other user name.

It wont help recover what you lost but it may prevent it from happening in the future. That is of course unless the HD takes a crap then your SOL

“It’s beyond pride. It’s a restored trust. There’s a confidence again, a passion that teeters on swagger. More than anything, (Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads) has restored the Iowa State “it” factor, the steadfast belief that it is great to be a Cyclone...the man’s enthusiasm is genuine to the core...”

Not totally true. You can recover music off the iPod and put it back on your hard drive and change the user account and pull it off each iPod. Yeah it'd be a pain in the ***, but it can be done.

And there are work arounds to having multiple iPods on 1 library. I set up both of my parents on their laptop off the same iTunes library. It was a pain in the ***, but can be done.

    Re: iTunes help

Did you lose the MP3s off your computer? Or did you somehow lose the iTunes "Music Library" and "Library" files?

If it's the latter, try this fix:
No content shows up in iTunes after updating

This was the first place I looked. When I open My Documents up I get like 3 iTunes librarys and when I try to open them up it just takes me to iTunes with half my music collection.

There is one folder that says 'previous iTunes library' and when I open it it does not take me to iTunes and it opens up to some strange page that has a bunch of nonsense in it.

    Re: iTunes help

Doesn't sound like a hard drive issue.

The songs exist. I have 4 iPods I sync regularly with no problems.

The music files are likely still in your library.

When you plug in your iPod you should see it listed on left side. From there if you click on it you should see all kinds of options in main window. One of them should specify what music playlists (or entire library) you want synced.
