    5 Kickers, 5 Punters

Has everyone here noticed that we are the only team in the NCAA with 5 kickers on our roster and 5 punters on our roster? This kind of surprised me, most teams don't carry that many at all.

I'm not surprised - when I was there we had probably 5 kickers and 3 punters.

Only 2 kickers and 1 punter are on scholarship. It's not like we are wasting scholarships on these positions, plus we have had out struggles at those spots in the past.

    Re: 5 Kickers, 5 Punters

In reality...ISU has 2 kickers and 1 maybe 2 punters depending on who you ask. The others, while I applaud them for being a part of a Division 1 football team, will probably be on the practice squad.

? Mahoney has been the top scorer the past two seasons despite a down season last year and Brandtner is arguably the best punter ISU has ever had. You want to talk about a weak link, maybe try looking towards the corners who were burned in every single game last season.

Weakest link? No. Easiest to single out? Yes.

Did you really look at every roster in the country to compare? Talk about having some free time!

Most are walk-ons who will never get within a country mile of playing in a game. You are right, it's hard to figure out why any team would need that many walk-on kickers and punters just taking up space and using up oxygen. Because that's all they will ever do at ISU.

"Every season" implies more than the last two.

Lack of a reliable kicking game cost us big time in close losses in 2001, 2004, and 2005. Hell, even 1972 (Nebraska).

    Re: 5 Kickers, 5 Punters

we will probably have a non shollie player do the punting. let's hope he can run, pass and punt. we need some razzle dazzle plays on our punting team to win some ball games. i had a kid on rhoads 'desk that averaged 43 yards per punt and he had kicked 6 field goals from over 50 yards and two of them 59 yards out his senior year -we lost him to west texas at canyon, texas.

VanderKemp is a scholarshipped player. He will be the punter.

"Noticed"? You checked the rosters of hundreds of schools at every NCAA level?

Anyway, with an open punting position (and place kicking a little shaky last season), it's not unusual for a number of walkons to give the job a shot.

    Paul Rhoads' players never quit.
    (They just disappear offseason)

That makes practice more fun - we have puntoffs and kicker tests.

Van Der Kamp is our punter. We are not taking a kicker til next year at the earliest.

    Re: 5 Kickers, 5 Punters

Aren't Guyer and Mahoney in the same class? Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think Guyer has redshirted. Is anyone else surprised by this?
